  • Goedhuis, April 2011, Score: 88-90

Sweet blackberry fruit aromas. This is a rich and luscious Merlot styled Médoc with lots of polish which will give a great deal of mid-term drinking pleasure. DR

  • Neal Martin, September 2012, Score: 89

Tasted at the Crus Bourgeois 2010 tasting in London. For a 2010, this has a relatively exotic bouquet with dark cherries, dark plum and mulberry fruit that are well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe fleshy tannins. I like the balance here and there is a lovely rounded, quite sensual finish. Very fine. Drink now-2018.

  • Robert Parker, February 2013, Score: 90

This is a terrific wine from another estate that has a consistent record of excellence for close to two decades. The blend in 2010 is 50% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest mostly Cabernet Franc with just a touch of Petit Verdot. This wine became famous because of its extraordinarily long, pre-fermentation cold soak of over two weeks. This continues under the new administration, and the alcohols achieved in 2010 are at 14.2%. The wine is a big, rich, sleeper of the vintage with loads of blackberry and floral-infused blueberry fruit. Sitting across from Sociando-Mallet, this estate is certainly well-located, resting on well-drained, gravelly soils with some veins of clay running through them. The 2010 is medium to full-bodied, pure, quite fragrant and capable of lasting at least a decade.Drink: 2013-2023

  • Robert Parker, May 2011, Score: 88-90

This impressive 2010 is one of the most powerful, rich wines I have ever tasted from this over-achieving estate in the northern sector of the Medoc. A blend of 50% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot that achieved 14.2% natural alcohol (a record at this property), it boasts an inky/blue/purple color along with a sweet perfume of blueberry liqueur, acacia flowers, graphite, espresso roast and white chocolate. The complex aromatics are followed by a deep, medium to full-bodied wine with outstanding concentration and texture. It should drink well for a decade or more. Drink: 2011 - 2021

  • Jancis Robinson, October 2012, Score: 17

47% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot. Dark crimson. Rich fruit and some flowers on the nose. No sweetness but very pure and fleshy with a cool finish. Clever, sophisticated stuff. There’s a dry finish but the tannins are not aggressive. Very beguiling and GV. A little more forward than some. Appetising dry finish. Drink 2014-2022.

Region

Haut-Médoc

The Haut-Médoc is an appellation within the Médoc that stretches along the left bank of the Gironde from Blanquefort in the south to the north of Bordeaux. The region encompasses the more famous communes of St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux. Following the 1855 classification many of its most famous estates were classified and scored as first, second, third, fourth or fifth growths. This was based on their social and commercial positions at the time. Most of these classed growths use the village appellation name, such as Pauillac. However five of these classed growths fell outside a village appellation so take the name Haut-Médoc. Many of the vineyards which are classified as Haut-Médoc may actually also be referred to as Cru Bourgeois wines. These wines have lower permitted yields and so offer great value for money.
