It has a deep crimson colour, and a sophisticated concentration of black fruit on the nose. The palate has the St Estèphe trait of a salty, soy sauce bite, with fine chalky tannins and fresh acidity.

    A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, offering 14% alcohol, the Cos-Labory is a little muted on the nose but reluctantly reveals some attractive earthy black fruits and well integrated oak. The palate is very tannic on the entry but there is good acidity and purity, much better than in recent years, very structure on the finish with just a touch of orange rind on the aftertaste. Fine.

    Narrowly constructed for a 2010, this dense ruby/purple-tinged offering displays attractive mineral, blueberry and red currant notes as well as an elegant, solid style, but it is essentially superficial with significant tannins for the amount of depth. Château Cos Labory

Directly across the road from Cos d’Estournel in St Estephe, Ch Cos Labory is a historical under-performer that has been improving in leaps and bounds over the past decades. Bernard Audoy’s focus on improved vineyard practice, stricter selection and investment in the cellar has paid dividends. The 18 hectare vineyard Prices remain reasonable as quality rises and these wines are some of the best value in the Medoc.

Region

St Estèphe

St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
