  • Goedhuis, December 2011

Although neighbouring Pommard, this is a surprisingly charming 1er Cru. An extremely impressive wine, concentrating on rich intense fruit flavours, aided by a very uplifting and fresh spiced fruit finish.

  • Neal Martin, January 2012, Score: 92-94

Always one of the finest wines from this oft over-looked domaine with the great Jean-Pierre Charlot at the helm. His Fremiets has crisp, leafy red-berried fruits on the nose with fine delineation, with Voillot's tincture of rusticity lending charm. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp, slightly malic entry leading to a very taut, precise finish that is not complex, but has an alluring crispness and nonchalance.

  • Burghound, April 2012, Score: 91

While notably ripe this is restrained and ultra-pure with wonderfully transparent liqueur-like red pinot fruit that is liberally laced with wet stone and spice nuances. There is excellent vibrancy to the intensely mineral-driven and well-delineated flavors that terminate in a mouth coating, austere and impressively persistent finish where a touch of wood surfaces. A really lovely effort of grace and harmony. 2018+.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2012, Score: 17

Medicinal ripe fruit nose. Pure, fresh fruit. Really quite charming with good purity though still lots of tannin. Drink 2015-2023

Luckily the wines are superb as well - terroir-driven, classically styled and silky - they are hallmarks of top quality Côte de Beaune reds.Read less

Region

Volnay

A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
