    A very polished wine, with its sweet dark intense black fruit flavours there is a fine level of ripeness, aided by excellent intensity and structure. This wine has a fine balance between richness and great freshness of fruit. An excellent St Estèphe.

    This property must have had some hail damage, as the 2011 seems lighter than normal (and I tasted it on three separate occasions). The color is a healthy dense ruby/plum and there is an attractive, up-front bouquet, but the wine is medium-bodied, somewhat superficial, fresh and fruity. It is ideal for drinking in its first 7-8 years of life. Drink: 2012-2020.

Ch Lafon Rochet is ideally situated due northwest of Lafite and west of Cos d'Estournel. Though its terroir is exceptional, many critics believed that earlier vintages in the 1970s and 1980s were too tannic and lacked charm. Since the 1990s, it has steadily improved due to several factors such as harvesting later, increasing the amount of new oak and using a higher percentage of Merlot in the blend - a trend which has a strong following in St Estèphe at the moment. From 1960-2021, the property was managed by three generations of the Tesseron family, and is now under the ownership of the Lorenzetti family, bringing into the Vignobles Cruzes-Lorenzetti portfolio alongside Ch d'Issan and Lilian Ladouys. In 2025, Vincent Bache-Gabrielsen has taken over after managing at Pédesclaux, swapping roles with incumbant Managing Director Christophe Congé, who is heading back to Pauillac to manage Pédesclaux.Read less

Region

St Estèphe

St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
