  • Wine Advocate, Aug 2014, Score: 95+

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon has an enticing nose of mulberries, black-plum preserves, cassis and blueberries with an undercurrent of violets, cedar and menthol. Medium-bodied and demonstrating great finesse, even at this youthful stage, the expressively perfumed, black-fruit flavors are nicely framed by firm, ripe tannins and refreshing acid. It finishes with incredible length. Drink it 2015 to 2025+.

Producer

Moss Wood

A cornerstone of the Margaret River wine industry, Moss Wood has been crafting exceptional wines since 1969. Founded by Dr Bill and Sandra Pannell, the estate was instrumental in establishing the region’s reputation, particularly for world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1985, esteemed winemaker Keith Mugford took over the reins, later joined by his wife, Clare, ensuring Moss Wood’s tradition of excellence continued. Nestled in the heart of Wilyabrup, the estate’s meticulously managed vineyards are a testament to its commitment to site expression and sustainability. With a philosophy rooted in low-yield viticulture and minimal-intervention winemaking, Moss Wood produces some of Australia’s most sought-after wines, led by its flagship Cabernet Sauvignon—renowned for its depth, elegance, and longevity. Today, Moss Wood remains a benchmark for fine wine in Margaret River, with an unwavering dedication to quality and innovation. The Mugfords continue to honour the estate’s heritage while setting the standard for Australian Cabernet Sauvignon.

Region

Margaret River

Certainly the best wine area in Western Australia, if not the whole country. The idyllic scenery of Margaret River (surf-lapped rocky coast, towering karri forest, abundant wildlife) has only been home to wine production since the 1970s. Hard to believe given the quality of the Chardonnays and Cabernets produced by the likes of Leeuwin, Cullen, Moss Wood and Vasse Felix. Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon all also thrive here. The climate is mild, tempered by the Indian Ocean and the drying wind known as the Freemantle Doctor, and infertile red loam soils are the most sought after for viticulture.
