  • Goedhuis, March 2018

Domaine de l’Arlot is one of our favourite producers. Tasting en primeur this wine showed huge potential, and with 6 years’ ageing all the elements have woven together gracefully. There are densely layered damson, mulberry and wild strawberry notes on the nose, whilst fresh acidity on the palate gives the wine great vitality. Concentrated and delicious on the long, elegant finish.

  • Goedhuis, December 2012

A wine of huge class which exudes its breeding and the origins of this fine vineyard. Having initially tasted the 3 component parts from the top, middle and lower slopes, I tasted a wonderful blend of all three highlighting the intensity and preciseness of fruit. This is a delicious wine – dense, full and concentrated with layers of flavours. Huge potential.

  • Burghound, January 2013, Score: 91-93

(From an enormous 7.5 ha parcel of vines planted in the early 1950s). A brooding but notably ripe nose of dark cherry and pungent earth aromas slides gracefully into strikingly rich and tautly muscular big-bodied flavors that possess praiseworthy concentration. There is plenty of underlying tension and energy to the mouth coating and very serious finish that displays only a touch of rusticity. This is potentially outstanding but note that it will, as is usually the case, require plenty of bottle age. (91-93)/2023+

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2013, Score: 17

Dense and drier than most of the wines from this domaine. But very concentrated and solid. Convincing and not too manipulated.

Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)Read less

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
