  • Goedhuis, January 2014

With yields of only 15hl per ha, this is unsurprisingly a more powerfully intense Lambrays than some years. Tight, rich and full of wild black fruits, this is a very structured and concentrated style with lots of ageing potential. Drink 2018 – 2032

  • Neal Martin, December 2012, Score: 90-92

The 2012 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru was tasted as a blend of one new and one used barrel, representing what the final assemblage will be. There are just 50 pieces this year, whereas normally there are over 100. It has a distinctive, quintessential Clos des Lambrays bouquet with well-defined brambly black fruit, forest floor and damp moss scents. Fine tannins underpin the palate with crisp, almost sharp acidity and a slightly herbaceous finish that distinguishes it from others. As so often the case, it comes across stern and rustic in its youth, but experience has told me that after 6-8 years in bottle that stem character will disappear and I like the balance and focus here. Those that appreciate Clos des Lambray’s style will appreciate this, those who prefer more fruit head over to Clos de Tart.

  • Burghound, January 2015, Score: 94

(produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age). A markedly floral nose exhibits a broad array of spice and red and dark berry fruit aromas that include plum, cassis and earth. There is excellent detail and plenty of punch to the mineral-inflected flavors that are shaped by ultra-refined tannins on the balanced and gorgeously persistent finish that is firm and serious but not really especially austere. This is seriously good with a lovely sense of harmony plus the perfect balance suggests that this will mature over a very long time. Drink 2027+

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2014, Score: 17

Lively deep ruby. A rather 'natural' nose! Intensity and potential certainly but not the purest. I look forward to seeing what others have written already. A little bitter on the end. But it does taste like a grand cru. Drink 2018-2028

Producer

Domaine des Lambrays

This Morey Saint Denis domaine may have passed through various owners over the recent decades, but one noticeably steadfast mark on Burgundy’s landscape has been Thierry Brouin, making the wines at this iconic estate since 1979 until his retirement in 2017. His signature style of whole bunch vinification for the grand cru has carved an esteemed place for Thierry in Burgundy’s story. The domaine was recently purchase by Bernard Arnault of LVMH, and a new régisseur has been installed. Boris Champy has nearly 10 years’ experience in the Côte d’Or working at Louis Latour, and before that in California and Bordeaux. He and Thierry worked closely alongside each other in 2017, ensuring a smooth handover. Tantalisingly short of a monopole, the domaine owns 8.66 hectares of the 8.8 ha Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru in the heart of Morey Saint Denis. As well as the substantial Clos, the domaine also has vines in premier cru and village sites within Morey, and added two small premier cru plots in Puligny Montrachet in the 1990s.

Region

Clos des Lambrays

Clos des Lambrays is a Grand Cru appellation situated in the commune of Morey St Denis in the Cote de Nuits. The 8.8 hectares of land, largely owned by the Saier family, were elevated from Premier Cru to Grand Cru status in 1979 as the vineyards clearly had huge potential. Nestled between Gevrey Chambertin to the north and Chambolle Musigny to the south the best Clos des Lambrays wines combine the feminine delicacy of Chambolle with the power and structure of Gevrey.
