  • Neal Martin, December 2013, Score: 93-95

The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe Aux Moines comes from 0.87-hectares of vine planted in 1928. It veers more towards the carefree, zesty fruit profile with orange blossom and fresh apricot infusing the pure red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit. This is feminine and nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a very pure, structured entry, a fine line of acidity and wonderful tension towards the finish. This is a seductive but nonchalant Gevrey-Chambertin with superb length that should age with style.

  • Burghound, January 2014, Score: 90-93

This is both aromatically cooler and more elegant with ultra-pure essence of red pinot fruit that is liberally laced with mineral and wet stone hints. The mineral influence continues onto the lilting yet focused and intense medium-bodied flavors that vibrant with energy before concluding in an almost pungently saline-inflected, long and linear finish that exhibits just a touch of youthful austerity. This is a seriously good wine that is more elegant than usual. Drink 2022+

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2014, Score: 17.5

Chestnut, savoury nose. Very racy. Bright fruit and very flattering, lots of leafy freshness. Chewy end. Chunky. Drink 2020-2035

He had learned from the best, most notably the late Henri Jayer of Vosne Romanée and Domaine Drouhin in the Willamette Valley in Oregon with whom he did his formative training. He is a keen participant in the growing trend towards minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery. The domaine has a remarkable array of very old vines, many having been planted between the wars. The Fourrier wines are pure and balanced.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
