  • Goedhuis, January 2014

Very pronounced aromas of coffee and chocolate, this wine has tremendously sweet, elegant fruit in the mouth aided by a lovely intensity of flavours. A wine with breadth and real style which will age superbly to reflect the best that Nuits St Georges can offer.

  • Neal Martin, December 2013, Score: 90-92

The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers comes from 50 and 70-year old vines - just under half a hectare. It has a little more delineation on the nose than the Aux Thorey, perfumed and floral with distant scents of dried orange peel. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent, candied entry. The acidity is nicely judged with blood orange infusing the red cherry fruit on the precocious finish. This is lip-smacking delicious.

  • Burghound, January 2014, Score: 90-93

This is the first wine to display no reduction with its markedly floral aromas of cassis, black cherry, spice and pungent earth. There is an opulent mouth feel as there is excellent mid-palate volume and concentration to the medium bodied flavors, all wrapped in an extract-rich and palate coating finish where a touch of wood influence surfaces. This is impressive. Drink 2022+

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2014, Score: 17

100% new oak. 70-year-old vines. Very millerandé every year so always concentrated. Scented and very well integrated on the nose already. Hint of chestnuts. Polish and vigour. Quite racy. But not at all skinny. Drink 2018-2030

He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
