  • Goedhuis, April 2014, Score: 89-91

This delicious blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc has a great volume of wild bramble fruit flavours. There is a natural charm and succulence, with a touch of vanilla and cocoa and a sweet generous finish.

  • Neal Martin, April 2014, Score: 90-92

The Les Cruzelles was picked from 26 September until 2 October, the same as La Chenade, and is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The nose is so pure, it almost reminds me of a top quality New World Pinot Noir. Blueberry and cassis to the fore! The palate is medium-bodied with firmer and more present tannins than the La Chenade, rendering this more masculine and probably with more longevity. It exerts a gentle grip towards the saline finish that feels natural and refined. Very fine.

  • Robert Parker, August 2014, Score: 87-88

Delicious wine from proprietor Denis Durantou, who is better known as the magician behind the great Pomerols of L-Eglise Clinet. This relatively nearby vineyard in Lalande has turned out a nice, ripe, rich, medium-bodied, opulent style of wine with lovely mulberry and black cherry fruit, as well as hints of new saddle leather and spice. It is medium-bodied, easygoing and doesn-t have the substance or power to last more than 4 or 5 years, but so what? Drink it up.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2014, Score: 16

Lifted red fruited, quite fresh and juicy. But the finish is very dry punctuated with flashes of redcurrant and spice. Nice oak control but not overly complex.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2014, Score: 17

90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc. Vibrant perfume, black cherry, wood smoke that dominates the finish. Modern, sleek, juicy. I find this really attractive, though the oak is teetering on being overdone. (RH)

  • Tim Atkin, May 2014, Score: 93

Denis Durantou says he expends just as much energy on his “lesser” wines as he does on L’Eglise-Clinet and it shows in the quality of this rich, textured, aromatic, black fruited red. There’s almost a note of Mediterranean herbs about this - in 2013! 2016-23

Producer

Château les Cruzelles

Part of the incredibly well-respected Durantou stable, this 10 hectare estate is rated as one of the "outstanding" Lalande-de-Pomerol Châteaux, in Robert Parker's Bordeaux guide. The grape varietals grown are 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. Only 2,000 cases are made.

Region

Lalande de Pomerol

Lalande de Pomerol is situated to the north-west of the Dordogne River north of Pomerol. Similar to the great Pomerol appellation the wines are Merlot dominated but sold at a fraction of the price. Some great value wines can be found to the south of the Lalande de Pomerol region as only the Barbanne River separates the two appellations.
