  • Neal Martin, December 2014, Score: 93-95

The 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru, which like the Clos de Bèze is matured in 30% new oak, has a tighty-wound bouquet with broody red berry fruit, oyster shell and granitic scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip. This seems more linear than the Clos-de-Bèze at the moment, but there is very good depth and a precise saline finish that will obviously need time and patience. I hope that it gains just a little more flesh by the time of bottling as this is a very fine Chambertin in the making. Drink: 2018 - 2038

(from purchased grapes that Perrot has the right to intercede with certain aspects of the viticulture). This is even more aromatically restrained than the Bèze with a markedly floral and earth-scented nose of both red and dark berries that is cool, elegant and airy. The rich, intense and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors are a bit more mineral-driven as well and I very much like the mid-palate density that adds to the sense of scale, all wrapped in hugely long finish where the abundant dry extract does a fine job of pushing the very firm tannic spine to the background, at least for the moment. The Bèze is a knock-out but my instinct is that ultimately this will prove to be the slightly better wine in time. Drink 2030+

Most of the vines are of a good age (13 of the 18 bottlings are 45+yrs old "Vieilles Vignes".) As a firm believer in noninterventionist winemaking, Christophe uses no chemical fertilisers, employs a green harvest to bear only six to seven bunches per vine, and both harvests and sorts by hand. Each wine receives 30%-60% new oak (depending on its cru status), ages for 14-18 months and is bottled without fining or filtration.Read less
