Neal Martin, December 2014, Score: 92-94
The 2013 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru is matured entirely in new oak like the Echézeaux, although this was entirely destemmed. It has a perfumed bouquet that is more nuanced and complex than the Echézeaux: very fine delineation and more expressive mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin and a feminine touch. There is plenty of tension here, plenty of mineral tones with a long and sensual finish. This is sheer class, although I believe young Maxime will make even better in the future. Drink: 2018 - 2035

Burghound, January 2015, Score: 92-94
(from a .40 ha parcel). This isn’t quite as ripe as the Echézeaux with a brooding nose that features spiced plum, red raspberry and exotic tea notes. The powerful, concentrated and exceptionally rich broad-shouldered flavors possess plenty of muscle as the dense but fine mouth coating tannins will require all of 12 years to completely resolve even though I suspect that it will be approachable in its youth. I very much like this as it’s a harmonious effort with lovely depth and length. Drink 2025+
Region
Grands Echézeaux
One of two Grand Crus within the Flagey-Echezeaux area right in the heart of the Cote de Nuits. Much more compact and homogenous than the neighbouring Echezeaux, the Grands Echézeaux vineyards are owned by around twenty producers - very modest in Burgundian terms. The most celebrated producers include Domaines de la Romanee Conti, d'Eugenie and Mongeard-Mugneret. These fine wines are richly complex yet balanced and have enormous ageing potential.
