Region
Pfalz
Pflaz is an important wine region and is the second largest in southern Germany, stretching 50 miles from Rheinhessen to Alsace. It is the sunniest and driest wine-producing region in Germany, sheltered by the Haardt Mountains and Donnersberg hills. The Pfalz was long associated with high yields, mechanical harvesting, and a reliance on such crossings as Müller-Thurgau and Kerner. However, now the best winemakers of the Pfalz tend to make rich, powerful, spicy wines, reminiscent of Alsace. Riesling is the most important grape variety and the region has been a leader in advocating the establishment of Grosses Gewächs full-bodied, dry wines from the best sites. Red wines are generally full bodied with alcohol levels often over 13%. Pfalz Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) is now attracting international attention.
