  • Goedhuis, May 2016

A multi-dimensional wine. The aromas are of earthy wild dark berry fruits, with hints of dark truffle. This is a sturdy and structured wine, the great volume of fruit supports the tannic depth. The finish is beautifully fresh, leaving one with the feeling that you have just tasted a wine of aristocratic distinction.

  • Neal Martin, December 2015, Score: 95-97

The 2014 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru has a more approachable bouquet than the 2014 Chambertin; it is more forward and expressive with red cherries, raspberry preserve and orange blossom aromas, which gain intensity and volume with virtually each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannin. I adore the purity here, the sensuality of this Clos-de-Bèze that (whisper it) you might mistake for Armand Rousseau. This might well be Laurent Ponsot's finest contribution to the vintage. Drink 2019-2045

  • Burghound, December 2015, Score: 93-95

The exuberantly spicy if notably restrained nose grudgingly reveals wisps of mostly various red berries along with hints of underbrush, humus, earth and sandalwood. There is fine density and plenty of punch to the larger-scaled flavors that exhibit outstanding delineation on the relatively refined if quite firmly structured finale. This is tannic and serious yet not hard and the natural elegance of a classic Clos de Bèze is in evidence. (Top value 93-95) Drink from 2029+

Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long-lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations. The estate has eschewed the fashion of using new oak barrels to age the wines, preferring seasoned casks which act as an “elevage” vessel rather than imparting barrel flavours. As Alexandre says “we want our wines to taste the maximum of the true fruit and terroir flavours that nature provides us with".Read less

Chambertin Clos de Bèze

Gevrey-Chambertin has more Grand Crus than any other appellation in Burgundy. Unusually wines from Clos de Beze may simply call themselves Chambertin, which is an indicator of the quality of these vineyards. One of the most complete of all the Grand Crus, rivalling the revered Romanee-Conti, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze wines are the pinnacle of Pinot Noir - fragrant, powerfully complex and intense.
