The latest release of the wine that made Moss Wood's reputation, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon doesn't disappoint. Striking aromas of vanilla, cedar and crème de cassis lead into a palate that's packed with fruit, dark chocolate and faint herbal notes that impart a savory edge to the flavors. It's supple and creamy in texture yet powerful and concentrated, with fine-grained tannins that frame the long finish. It's another in a long lineage of top-notch Cabernets from Moss Wood. 95/100 DRINK 2017-2034
Certainly the best wine area in Western Australia, if not the whole country. The idyllic scenery of Margaret River (surf-lapped rocky coast, towering karri forest, abundant wildlife) has only been home to wine production since the 1970s. Hard to believe given the quality of the Chardonnays and Cabernets produced by the likes of Leeuwin, Cullen, Moss Wood and Vasse Felix. Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon all also thrive here. The climate is mild, tempered by the Indian Ocean and the drying wind known as the Freemantle Doctor, and infertile red loam soils are the most sought after for viticulture.
