Antonio Galloni, October 2021, Score: 94
The 2016 Barbaresco Albesani is holding back so much right now. With a few hours of air, the Albesani starts to reveal the inner sweetness and perfume that are so typical of wines from this Neive vineyard. Sweet dried cherry, rose petal, kirsch, cinnamon, orange peel and sweet tobacco open with a bit of coaxing. Like all the 2016s, the Albesani is painfully tannic at this stage. It clearly has a lot to offer for those who can wait for the searing tannins to soften, even if just a bit. Drink 2026-2041.
Region
Barbaresco
Situated due northeast of Barolo, Barbaresco's soils are predominantly calcareous marls similar tothe vineyards of La Morra. Barbarescos tend to be lighter and more delicate in style with tannins that are often more textured than its Barolo counterparts. Slightly lower in altitude than Barolo, its Nebbiolo tends to ripen earlier creating some possible vintage variations between the two neighbouring areas. The wines are also released a year earlier.
