  • Goedhuis, April 2018

This is an exciting new addition to our list this year. These vineyards in the cool Cienega Valley, California’s smallest AVA, have been under vine since 1849. Its mere 20 miles from the Pacific Coast give the region a cooling maritime influence, and its limestone soils are perfect for growing Pinot Noir. The 2016 is a delicately violet-scented, strawberry-fruited Pinot Noir. There is a supple ripeness to the fruit set against plenty of acidity thanks to the valley’s deep diurnal range, where the fruit cools down over night and enjoy chilly mornings before being drenched in that gorgeous Californian sun. It is thus a wine of “lift and brightness”, owner Christian Pillsbury explains, rather than density and power.

  • Burghound, Jun 2019, Score: 90

A high-toned nose features the essence of red pinot fruit, cherry, lavender and a pretty hint of spice. There is both an attractive sense of energy as well as a sleek texture to the delicious middle weight flavors that are shaped by relatively refined tannins on the dusty, balanced and focused finish. This refreshing effort needs to add depth but my rating assumes that will happen if it's held to maturity. Outstanding. Drink 2023+

  • Wine Advocate, April 2018

I am blown away by the texture and savory aspects of his (Cory Waller's) Pinots, off-set as they are by a fresh, lively fruit presence, one that is never cloying. R.H. Drexel

  • Producer Note, April 2018

The Estate Pinot Noir does a tense balancing act between red-tones and darker, fleshier fruits. One can pick out aromas such as pomegranate, blackberry, cherry pit, rose hip and black teas, as well as baking spices and chalk-like, mineral notes. At its core, it is focused with great verve and ageability. It shows medium weight with an elegant tannin structure.

A remote, pacific refuge located under the shadow of the Gavilan Mountain Range, the estate rests on the San Andreas Fault. Only 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean, this site benefits from an ideal, temperate maritime climate as well as the coveted calcareous soils requisite in the cultivation of vivid and energetic Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Eden Rift's winemaker Cory Waller, spent time in Napa, Oregon and in Martinborough, New Zealand, and neighbouring Calera, before joining the team at Eden Rift. A man of few words, Waller favours the fruit of vines that struggle profoundly to produce small, yet delineated yields. He prefers to allow Mother Nature to do her thing.Read less

Region

California

California is responsible for producing more than 80% of all North American wine. The state extends some 1,100 km north to south and vineyards can be found along most of its length. Pacific ocean breezes and high altitude offer welcome cooling influences to the warm, bright sunshine. This region is rich in old vines, many being planted in the late 19th century and boasts an extraordinary range of soil. It's home to someof thge worl's most prestigious wines and produces a rich and diverse range of wine styles, from stately and expressive Cabernet Sauvignons to juicy and elegant Pinot Noirs. Notable wine regions include Napa Valley and Sonoma County.
