  • Goedhuis, May 2018, Score: 95-97

An extraordinarily expressive wine, which stood out amongst an already outstanding selection. Brilliant shining deep opaque colour. Full of rich dark damsons and black cherries, with hints of liquorice. A wonderfully joyous and giving style, totally mouthcoating with hints of smoke, mocha and spice. I was struck by its balance of generosity and richness of fruit and the complexity of the central tannic core, giving this wine huge drive and energy. This exudes class and is for the long term.

  • Neal Martin, June 2018, Score: 96

The 2016 Graham’s Vintage Port is inky black in colour. The bouquet is voluminous and intense, the aromas almost shrouding your head! Blackberry, black olive, clove and a touch of smoke, just a hint of pencil box in the background. The palate is brilliant, quite brilliant. Supple tannin, a satin-like texture, perfect balance and unerring purity, this is a fabulous Graham’s that effortlessly fans out and caresses the senses on the finish. This Graham’s has huge potential and is going to give a lot of pleasure for many years.

  • James Suckling, May 2018, Score: 99

Extremely complex aromas that show the classic Graham character of black-fruit marmalade and burnt oranges. Follows through to a full body with great grip at the finish. Lightly sweet. Chewy and powerful. Such a focus at the end.

  • Matthew Jukes, May 2018, Score: 20+

This wine has every single facet of flavour and energy that I adore in vintage Port. The nose is epic and all-encompassing and the power and attack on the palate is relentless and also insanely pleasurable at the same time. Infinitely layered and lasting for minutes on the palate I went back to taste this Port three times such was the magnetic appeal of its profound flavours. While this is a dense and indulgent wine it has exquisite freshness, too, and the balance is nothing short of perfect.

The story of Graham's is the story of twofamilies, both of Scottish origin - the Grahams and the Symingtons - whose commitment to the making of memorable wines has earned for Graham's a reputation as a leader in the production ofoutstanding Vintage Ports. In 1890 Graham's became one of the first Port companies to invest in Upper Douro vineyards with theacquisition of the famous property; Quinta dos Malvedos. Since then, Malvedos has been recognized as one of the Douro Valley's finest ‘river Quintas,' and the quality of the wines from the vineyardcontinues to be fundamental to Graham's reputation as a leading producer of quite exceptionalVintage Port.In 1970 the Grahams sold the company to the Symingtons who brought with them their own rich heritage in the Port trade and who continue to develop the reputation of this historic company and its wines.Read less

Region

Port

Port is made in the Cima Corgo, Baixo Corgo and Douro Superior districts of the Douro Valley in the north of Portugal. The summers are hot and dry and the climate becomes more continental as you move further east towards the upper Douro Valley. Here temperatures often exceed 40 degrees. The Douro Valley has steep hillsides with terraces, which is not only aesthetically pleasing but is also extremely useful for making quality wine. The schist soils aid in drainage and have become very important to port production, so much so that much of the Douro table wines have been relegated to granite soils. The six main grape varieties used for port production are Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Tinta Barroca, Touriga Francesa and Tinta Amarela. There are another 42 grape varieties that are permitted but these six are considered to be the noblest ones, each adding something different to the blend. After the harvest the grapes are trodden, often by foot but more often by machines, in giant lagars (troughs). Port is a fortified wine so during fermentation ‘brandy' (not actually brandy but a grape-distilled spirit) is added to increase thealcoholic strength to around 17-19 % abv. This leaves a sweet, red fortified wine with lots of vibrant fruit. There are many different types of Port from the Basic Ruby Ports, through to Tawny Ports and LBVs, to probably the most famous of all Vintage Port that can take 20 years to reach its peak. When mature, Vintage Port is a unique tasting experience with warm, concentrated spicy-fruit flavours and a superb length that just goes on and on.
