  • Goedhuis, November 2017

The Murgers has greater density to its tannins than the Thorey. Its old vines always have a lot of millerandage (small berries) and thus the phenolic concentration is heightened here and ensures ageing potential. Deep, dark, and spiced.

  • Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 92-94

The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers has a precise bouquet, tightly wound at the moment with black cherry, boysenberry and cold stone aromas, much more backward than the Aux Thorey. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, tightly knit and focused, tensile with a precise, quite pointed, sorbet-fresh finish. There is something clockwork about this Murgers—every component synchronized the other. Drink 2020-2040

  • Burghound, January 2018, Score: 91-93

There is enough reduction to render the nose difficult to evaluate though it does seem ripe. Otherwise the restrained medium weight flavors possess excellent structural ripeness as well as fine size, weight and power on the intense, harmonious and mouth coating finish. This concentrated effort is a classic Murgers of muscle and power but no rusticity. Outstanding. Drink: 2026+

  • Decanter, January 2018, Score: 93

The Aux Murgers is somewhat wilder and more brooding than the Aux Thorey, even though the two vineyards are near neighbours. It opens in the glass with notes of smoked meat, black cherry, wild berries and forest floor. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and juicy, its tannins fine but chalky, nicely cloaked in cool fruit and finishing with good length and cut. This is edgier and more mineral than the Aux Thorey. Drink 2026-2046

Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
