  • Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 88-90

The 2016 Vosne Romanee les Barreaux has quite a compact bouquet with scents of blackberry, bilberry and a touch of sous bois, a little introspective at the moment but pure. The palate is dense with thickset tannin, ripe and quite robust, maybe just requiring a little more finesse and Pinoté to come through on the finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle. Drink 2020-2028

  • Burghound, January 2018

There is just enough wood lurking in the background of the black cherry, plum and Asian-style tea-inflected aromas to mention. The sleek, delicious and beautifully well-detailed medium-bodied flavors possess a polished mouthfeel, all wrapped in a saline finish where a touch of youthful austere arises. This too is better than average for its level and should make for a fine age-worthy Vosne villages. Outstanding. Drink: 2023+

  • Decanter, January 2018, Score: 88

Anne Gros’ vines in the lieu-dit of Les Barreaux are 75 years old, and they have produced an attractive 2016 which open in the glass with notes of spicy, briary fruit and smoked meat. On the palate the wine is supple and nicely concentrated, with a sappy, energetic core of fruit. Drink 2020-2030

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2018, Score: 17

More smoky and savoury than their Chalandins, with a long, bonfire smoke finish and succulent red fruits. The tannin is soft-edged but gives enough shape to age well. Drink 2020-2030 (RH)

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
