  • Goedhuis, November 2018

Named after the walnut trees that flourished on this site in the past. Rewarding, with intense flavours of sweet small cherries. Still very tight and youthful in the mid-palate, with a mineral drive. It is bright and fresh on the finish. Wonderful clarity and great depth.

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 92-94

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers 1er Cru comes replete with veins of blue fruit on the nose, perhaps giving just a little nod toward Vosne-Romanée in style. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grippy tannin compared to the domaine’s other crus. It feels quite saline and peppery toward a finish with a long aftertaste. This is one of their more intellectual offerings this year. 2022 - 2042

  • Burghound, January 2019, Score: 91-93

Here too the nose is composed of an elegant array of airy red cherry, violet and plum where additional breadth is present in the form of spice and lavender nuances. The sleek, rich and well-detailed flavors exude evident minerality that carries over to the balanced if compact, serious and moderately austere finale. A high quality built to age Gruenchers of power and punch though it is by no means rustic.

After attending viticultural college in Beaune in the 1980s, she began assisting her father, Gaston Barthod, at the family domaine. Her straightforward, no-nonsense approach helped introduce a sorting table, extended lees contact, a gentle cold soak before fermentation, and domaine bottling. All this enabled greater control over the quality of fruit, texture of tannins, and purity of flavours. The results have been year upon year of magical masterpieces from Chambolle Musigny. Along with her partner Louis Boillot, today she is joined in the vineyard and cellar by their son, Clément.Read less

Region

Chambolle Musigny

The wines of Chambolle Musigny are like no other. They can be superbly delicate, yet mindblowingly complex. Of all the northern Burgundy appellations, they are the most ethereal, and as a result the most feminine. Most of the Chambolle Musigny vineyard area is encompassed in its Village and Premier Cru appellations including the robust Beaux Bruns, the splendidly mineral Le Cras and the poised yet powerful Les Amoureuses. It produces only two Grand Crus - the round and rich Bonnes Mares which it shares with Morey St. Dénis, as well as what could be described as the Stradivarius of grand crus, Musigny.
