  • Goedhuis, November 2018

The Sérafins own a third of a hectare of this grand cru across two different parcels: one within Mazoyères Chambertin and the other in Charmes Chambertin. An extremely rewarding style, with autumnal hedgerow fruit aromas. On the palate it has a savoury character and lovely sweet dark cherry fruit flavours. This has delicious volume, it is beautifully seductive.

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 90-92+

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from two parcels in the Charmes and Mazoyères climats, has a lovely bouquet with blueberry, violet and light mineral notes that become more pronounced with aeration. There is a sensuality to this Charmes-Chambertin that I like. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, grippy tannin, a more masculine Charmes-Chambertin compared to its peers with a very grippy and structured finish. Hopefully it can fight its way through the new oak and come out the other side with more terroir expression because there is certainly good substance here. 2025 - 2040

  • Burghound, January 2019, Score: 90-93

This is slightly riper as the nose reflects notes of cassis, dark currant, earth, the sauvage and discreet though again not invisible wood. There is even better richness and much more minerality to the broad-shouldered and robust flavors that terminate in a rustic, muscular and youthfully austere finish. Like the old vines Gevrey, this is decidedly old school in style and not surprisingly, is going to need plenty of cellar time. Drink 2029+

The Sérafin family are part of the establishment in Gevrey Chambertin. From when he took over from his father in the 1960 until his recent retirement, if you ever want to get in touch with Christian, you either had to call him as the rooster crowed in the morning or long after the sun had set. The rest of the time, he was working out in the vines or deep in his cellars. The domaine is now run by cousins Frédérique and Karine who are continuing the family tradition of making bold and structured wines. Their Pinots benefit from a period of bottle age and typically express fine tertiary characteristics. They do not fine or filter their wines, and only rack when necessary. Not shy of new oak, they use up to 50% on their straight Bourgogne and often 100% on the rest of their cuvées depending on the concentration. The wines tend to be ample and fleshy, and the richest ones need some cellaring in order to better integrate the spicy, cedarwood flavours.Read less

Region

Charmes Chambertin

Charmes-Chambertin is one of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. On gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north, gravelly soil forces the vines to work hard. Relatively large for a Grand Cru appellation, it is hard to generalise about the wines. Often intensely perfumed and seductive, Charmes-Chambertin can be approachable earlier than its Grand Crus neighbours.
