Goedhuis, April 2020
The “second wine” of the celebrated Tenuta dell’Ornellaia in Bolgheri. Le Volte offers a taste of the Super Tuscan at a fraction of the price. Approachable in its youth, it marries the local Sangiovese with classic Bordeaux varieties. The 2017 is succulent and fruit-forward, with fantastic aromas of bitter cherries and spices. A crisp acidity complements the dark black fruit and rich tannic core. Wonderful.

Wine Advocate, April 2019, Score: 92
Lots of big, dark fruit and a lack of water in the grapes define the unique personality of the 2017 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia. This is a highly extracted and succulent expression that delivers abundant fruit sweetness. The key to this vintage was waiting for proper ripeness, says estate manager and winemaker Axel Heinz. "The grapes continued to get smaller throughout the summer," he says. That lack of water resulted in very concentrated fruit, giving this entry-level wine a rich and modern feel as a result.

Producer Note, April 2019
Son of a particularly hot, dry year, Le Volte dell’Ornellaia 2017 is characterised by its usual deep ruby red colour. A pleasant bouquet of ripe red fruits and spices is sustained on the palate by crisp acidity and an open, enveloping tannic structure. Olga Fusari, Winemaker
Region
Bolgheri
The medieval town of Bolgheri was originally made famous by the poet Giosuè Carducci who wrote about the stunning Cypress Avenue, a breathtaking and magical three mile long corridor of trees leading up to the entrance to the village. Swept away to the coastal and most westerly area of Tuscany, Bolgheri has become synonymous with wines known as ‘Super Tuscans'. Composed of classic Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (intermixed with the occasional Sangiovese), the Super Tuscans began as mere experimentation in the 1960s and 70s. These international French varieties flourished in Bolgheri's warm, yet maritime climate which resulted in unexpected success and reknown. It is here that one finds such famous names as Ornellaia, Tignanello and Sassicaia.
