  • IN BOND prices exclude UK Duty and VAT. Wines can be purchased In Bond for storage in Private Reserves or another bonded warehouse, or for export to non-EU countries. Duty and VAT must be paid before delivery can take place.

  • RETAIL prices include UK Duty and VAT. Wines for UK delivery can only be purchased this way.

Deep cherry colour, the nose is slightly subdued in comparison to the other Shiraz cuvees with hints of violets and blueberries. In the palate however it is hugely impressive. This is a very structured wine with a full, concentrated tannic intensity and a controlled power with many years ahead of it.

    The red-fruited 2017 Magill Estate Shiraz comes across as open and generous, with notes of raspberries and cherries accented by hints of charred meat and dried spices. It's medium to full-bodied in the context of the Penfolds red-wine lineup (so full-bodied, to be honest), with crisp acids and a bright, slightly dusty finish. To its credit, it's distinctively different from the various other Shiraz offerings from Penfolds.

    While St Henri is atypical for its lack of new oak, so Magill - derived from a single estate - belies the dominant Penfolds cross-regional philosophy. Deep, dark and youthfully primary in colour, this single-vineyard red shows elegantly spicy, floral and peppery Shiraz aromatics. This is followed by an initially seductively silky texture behind the savoury tapenade and peppery dark berry fruit quality, which is currently grasped within a fist of sinewy tannins. The tannins soften down towards the finale, suggesting rather encouragingly that it's a more medium-bodied wine than full-on Penfolds. And so, with food, this will be approachable relatively early. Which food? Roast leg of lamb with anchovy, garlic and rosemary of course! Drink 2020 - 2030.

Region

Barossa Valley

Located in the south east of the wine state of South Australia, the Barossa Valley is not only the most famous wine region in Australia but also is the one which produces the most wine. The summers here are hot and dry so drought can be a problem. As a result, unirrigated bush vines scatter the landscape, some even dating back to the 19th Century. These old traditional Shiraz vines can produce the most concentrated form of what has become one of the world's most distinctive winestyles, Barossa Shiraz. These are rich, powerful, chocolaty and spicy wines, to which Viognier is sometimes added for extra perfume. There are old Grenache and Mourvèdre vines too in the region, which combine with Shiraz to make the popular blend ‘GSM'. Semillon is more common than Chardonnayin the Barossa, producing some rich white wines. Cabernet Sauvignon can also be found but only on certain soils as it is less dependable than Shiraz.
