  • Antonio Galloni, January 2021, Score: 98

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve is fabulous. Inky, rich and explosive, the 2018 is a fine addition to the lineage of one of Napa Valley's most historic wines. Inky red fruit, chocolate, leather and licorice all open in the glass. Aeration brings out floral top notes, raspberry and a hint of blood orange. There is plenty of depth, but the tannins are finer than they were a few years ago. Shorter time on the skins and a reduction in barrel fermentations really allow the pedigree of these Rutherford sites to come through. The 2018 is sensational. Drink 2026-2048

Blackberry, blackcurrant and mint with some sage and crushed-stone undertones. Full-bodied with chewy tannins that are in-check and nicely polished. Smoke, toasted oak and bark at the end, complementing the fresh yet ripe fruit. Drink after 2024.

One of the oldest continually operating wineries in Napa Valley, Beaulieu Vineyard has been setting the standard for rich, classic Napa Valley wines for over a century. Founded in 1900 by Georges de Latour, a French visionary who saw the similarities between Bordeaux and Rutherford, wanted to make world class wines to rival France. In 1938, Georges de Latour travelled to France’s Pasteur Institute to recruit a winemaker and viticulturist to bring his expertise to Rutherford in Napa Valley.  Andre Tchelistcheff, a Russian emigrant joined Beaulieu Vineyard. His experience, insights and leadership revolutionized not only Beaulieu Vineyard but the entire Napa Valley wine industry. His pursuit of higher wine quality and continuous innovation earned him the industry’s most famous title ‘The Maestro’. To this day Andre is widely considered the father of the California wine industry, influencing many changes. The winemaking intention at Beaulieu Vineyard has always been focused on crafting world class wines of distinction. Today, Beaulieu Vineyard farms over 1,100 acres of Napa Valley estate vineyards, some of the most coveted land in the valley. Current winemaker Trevor Durling, only the 5th in BV’s history, carries on the tradition today of continually innovating for quality, with Beaulieu standing proud as a Napa icon.Read less

Region

Napa Valley

This small town north of San Francisco has grown up to be one of California’s most famous wine regions. It is home to opulent Cabernets and sweetly-spiced Zinfandels, grown across many sub-regions including Stags Leap, Rutherford, Oakville and others. Cooling ocean fogs roll in from the Pacific at night and burn off in the summer sunshine, keeping the region cooler than you would expect for its latitude, and help produce some of the best Californian wines. Napa wines have the concentration and structure to age magnificently.
