  • Goedhuis, December 2019

According to Ghislaine, the warm summer conditions really suited this centrally located premier cru in 2018 and has, in her words, “made it much friendlier than some years!” Dense purple colour, it focuses more on black cherry and darker fruits. Despite its silky volume it has broad shoulders and subtle power. The overall intensity sits comfortably with the touch of minerality at the end of the palate. Excellent.

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 90-92

A ripe and well-layered nose features notes of plum and black raspberry liqueur where background hints of spice add breadth. This is unusually rich and big-bodied relative to its usual size and weight yet it retains its hallmark finesse on the seductively textured if decidedly firm finish. Lovely and understated. • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 90-93

Fractionally darker in colour than Ghislaine’s Aux Combottes, with an evenly balanced fruit. Plump raspberry with a hint of mulberry, then a coulis of concentrated red raspberry behind, good acidity, all very well integrated.

After attending viticultural college in Beaune in the 1980s, she began assisting her father, Gaston Barthod, at the family domaine. Her straightforward, no-nonsense approach helped introduce a sorting table, extended lees contact, a gentle cold soak before fermentation, and domaine bottling. All this enabled greater control over the quality of fruit, texture of tannins, and purity of flavours. The results have been year upon year of magical masterpieces from Chambolle Musigny. Along with her partner Louis Boillot, today she is joined in the vineyard and cellar by their son, Clément.Read less

Region

Chambolle Musigny

The wines of Chambolle Musigny are like no other. They can be superbly delicate, yet mindblowingly complex. Of all the northern Burgundy appellations, they are the most ethereal, and as a result the most feminine. Most of the Chambolle Musigny vineyard area is encompassed in its Village and Premier Cru appellations including the robust Beaux Bruns, the splendidly mineral Le Cras and the poised yet powerful Les Amoureuses. It produces only two Grand Crus - the round and rich Bonnes Mares which it shares with Morey St. Dénis, as well as what could be described as the Stradivarius of grand crus, Musigny.
