Found further inland, Frankland River wines are the product of their more continental climate. With a beautiful fragrance on the nose, combining violets, blackcurrant, and cracked black pepper, the palate is opulent, while a lovely zip of acidity keeps the wine on its toes. Made from heritage clones, with 3 years spent slumbering in oak, the slatey mineral edge is tempered by silk-soft tannins and a vibrancy. This will age gracefully for years to come. Drink 2023-2035.

Blackcurrants, crushed stone, and oyster shell with some seaweed aromas and flavors. Hints of tar. Medium body, fine and caressing tannins. Delicious finish. So drinkable now but will age beautifully. Screw cap.

2018 Cherubino Ovale Clonal Selection Cabernet Sauvignon Riversdale Vineyard exhibits far more style and grace than it ought to at this price. With a beautiful volume of cassis fruit, and skin tannins that rake the palate rhythmically as they glide by, this is a stellar creation. If you love Napa or Bolgheri Cabs, this will seem super-elegant by comparison, given it is not oak-soaked, and in terms of value, it soars above any examples I can think of from both regions.

Producer

Larry Cherubino

Larry Cherubino, a first-generation Australian with deep Italian roots, has become a luminary in Western Australia's wine industry. His journey began in horticulture, leading to pivotal roles at Tintara and Houghton wineries, as well as international consulting stints across New Zealand, the USA, South Africa, France, and Italy. In 2004, Larry and his wife, Edwina, acquired land in Frankland River, a region tied to Edwina's ancestors, who planted vines there in 1875. This purchase marked the inception of Cherubino Wines, with their first release in 2005. Today, Cherubino Wines spans over 120 hectares across six sustainably farmed vineyards in Frankland River, Pemberton, and Margaret River. The diverse plantings include varieties such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Fiano, and Mencía, reflecting Larry's commitment to expressing the unique terroirs of Western Australia. His meticulous approach in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the winery have earned the estate accolades, including being named Australian Winery of the Year in 2023.
