  • Goedhuis, December 2019

This superb grand cru is famed for 100% whole bunch vinification and goes through its élevage in 50% new oak and 50% one-year old casks. The Clos comprises five distinct soil types, including Prémeaux limestone, the same as that found in Chambertin. A wine of extraordinary complexity, unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage. Sweet enticing autumnal fruit flavours. The tannins are suave and svelte; they are so complete and in harmony with the rest of the wine. Beautifully layered, incredibly complex and so long. Fabulous.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 93-95

The 2018 Clos des Lambrays is 80% whole bunch this year and aged in 50% new oak. Jacques Desvauges took the sample from two barrels in proportion with the wood. It has a floral bouquet with scents of wilted rose petals and incense, hints of cedar filtering through the red berry fruit. The stems are much better integrated than in the Les Loups. The elegant palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, peppery but harmonious and sustained, and plenty of energy toward the finish. This is the only vintage vinified by Boris Champy, and he did a fine job. 2023 - 2042

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 91-93

Once again the nose is completely reduced and about all that can be said is that the underlying fruit appears to be quite ripe. On the palate there is good freshness and vivacity as the succulent and rounded middle weight plus flavors also possess a beguiling texture before culminating in a powerful, sappy, firm and somewhat raspy finish. It's hard to discern how much of the raspy feel of the tannins displayed by all three wines is due to the vintage or due to Boris Champy perhaps changing the vinification style somewhat compared to that of Thierry Brouin. Drink 91-93

  • Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 93-95

The 2018 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is showing very well, exhibiting notes of cassis, ripe wild berries, dark chocolate, black truffles, grilled squab and rich soil tones. On the palate, it's full-bodied, multidimensional and elegant, with refined structuring tannins, lively acids and good concentration. This is a deep and complete Clos des Lambrays that was vinified with 80% whole cluster and matured in 50% new oak. At 13.6% alcohol, it's very nicely balanced and seems set to rank as the finest rendition of this quasi-monopole since at least 2015.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 93-95

The statistics read: 36 hl/ha, 13.7% alcohol, 80% whole bunch and 50% new wood. Clean fresh purple with a wealth of succulent fruit, deep strawberry, heady raspberry a little chocolate dusting and of course the whole bunch effect with its spices. Acidity is up for the job but not evident much to taste – a tribute to the wealth of fruit. Just a faint note of salinity behind but does not in any way dominate. There is a little more fruit weight evident here than in recent years.

This Morey Saint Denis domaine may have passed through various owners over the recent decades, but one noticeably steadfast mark on Burgundy’s landscape has been Thierry Brouin, making the wines at this iconic estate since 1979 until his retirement in 2017. His signature style of whole bunch vinification for the grand cru has carved an esteemed place for Thierry in Burgundy’s story. The domaine was recently purchase by Bernard Arnault of LVMH, and a new régisseur has been installed. Boris Champy has nearly 10 years’ experience in the Côte d’Or working at Louis Latour, and before that in California and Bordeaux. He and Thierry worked closely alongside each other in 2017, ensuring a smooth handover. Tantalisingly short of a monopole, the domaine owns 8.66 hectares of the 8.8 ha Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru in the heart of Morey Saint Denis. As well as the substantial Clos, the domaine also has vines in premier cru and village sites within Morey, and added two small premier cru plots in Puligny Montrachet in the 1990s.Read less

Region

Clos des Lambrays

Clos des Lambrays is a Grand Cru appellation situated in the commune of Morey St Denis in the Cote de Nuits. The 8.8 hectares of land, largely owned by the Saier family, were elevated from Premier Cru to Grand Cru status in 1979 as the vineyards clearly had huge potential. Nestled between Gevrey Chambertin to the north and Chambolle Musigny to the south the best Clos des Lambrays wines combine the feminine delicacy of Chambolle with the power and structure of Gevrey.
