  • Goedhuis, December 2019

This premier cru owes its name to the Prior of the Abbaye de Cluny. The monastery historically owned all the great Gevrey Chambertin vineyards. The high proportion of clay in the soil contributes to a full-bodied wine with power and structure. Full of coffee bean and Arabian spice, this has a combination of scent and richness, with some underlying muscle and a true sense of terroir.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 91-93

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of red and black fruit mixed with truffle and subtle minty aromas that gradually gain intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, good body and a finely tuned, mineral-rich finish. A touch of spice lingers on the aftertaste. Very fine. 2022 - 2038

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 86-89

This is aromatically quite similar to the Au Closeau though the wood treatment is slightly less obvious. The medium-bodied, round and quite supple flavors possess a slightly finer mouthfeel though the dusty and grainy finish is again short and mildly drying. Once again, it's difficult to see this recovering its balance. Drink 2026+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 89-92

30% whole bunch, rich purple, quite a heavy nose, plump purple fruit, some blackberry as well as dark raspberry, perfectly well balanced but maybe needs a fresher finish. Round and silky but without all that much stuffing.

They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
