  • Goedhuis, December 2019

The Latricières vineyard is known for retaining moisture well during the summer months and this was hugely beneficial to the final quality of this outstanding grand cru in 2018. Brilliantly composed, preserving purity of fruit with great structure. High class.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 91-94

Very intense purple. There is power here and very good ripeness. Black pepper both at the start and at the finish, massive density, some firm tannins, fairly massive but a bit dry too. This is still very backward but I suspect may not topple the Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Guettes as the Bize wine of the vintage.

Producer

Domaine Simon Bize et Fils

Domaine Simon Bize is a substantial estate by Burgundy standards, with 22 hectares mainly in the appellation of Savigny Lès Beaune and two fine grand cru parcels in Corton Charlemagne and Latricières Chambertin. It is now under the careful management of Chisa, the late Patrick Bize’s wife, and Marielle Grivot, Patrick’s sister. They like to continue his practice of whole bunch fermentation and gentle handling of the fruit during the vinification process. The result is always very stylish wines, which possess the sweetness of fruit and subtle core of tannins, which are such a character of the wines of Savigny.

Region

Latricières Chambertin

Latricières-Chambertin is one of the nine Grands Crus in the Gevrey-Chambertin district on the Côte de Nuits, producing red wine from Pinot Noir. It is located on a gentle slope in the far south of Gevrey-Chambertin next to the Morey-St-Denis border. The vineyard lies on white oolite soils, sheltered from the winds and hail by the woods of the Montagne de la Combe Grisard to the North West. When young these wines are bursting with strawberry and raspberry flavours, as well as violets and gamey undertones. Compared to other Grand Cru Gevrey, Latricières-Chambertin is not ultra-powerful and seems to exude a sublime lacy quality.
