  • Goedhuis, December 2019

The Grivot family own a whopping 2.7 ha extending over nine lieux dits, which combine to produce an archetypal village Vosne Romanée. The wonderful damson and violet scents are bound together by supple, sensual tannins and a gentle, glossy veneer. Fine, yet with restrained power.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 89-91

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Village, matured in 20–25% new oak, has a well-defined, almost airy bouquet of red cherries, cranberry and sous-bois aromas that develop rose petal notes with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple opening and quite juicy in style. An attractive peppery finish extends the aftertaste. Very fine. 2021 - 2032

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 87-90

A more elegant and certainly spicier and cooler nose slowly reveals its array of various red berries and exotic tea scents. There is reasonably good energy to the medium-bodied flavors that possess a rich and caressing mouthfeel that terminate in delicious, exuberant and almost gulpable finish. This highly seductive effort will almost undoubtedly tighten up once it's bottled. Drink 2024+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 90-92

Picked on two dates, the second having higher sugar levels but better pH. Pretty perfumed pink. Very sensual, sweet ripe cherry fruit, raspberries, quite high octane but still in balance. Some sucrosity.

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
