  • Goedhuis, March 2023

A blend born of a delightful patchwork of five vineyards from across the commune, this is a superb reflection of the Verduno’s diverse terroir. The 2019 shows exquisitely rich red fruit and dried rose on the nose, which reinvents itself as dark cherry, blood orange, and leather on the multi-layered palate. With three years in oak, there is a soft suppleness, while the fine-grained tannins add some grip. This is a deliciously moreish Barolo, that finishes with trademark morello cherry and mouth-watering acidity. Drink 2024-2030.

  • Antonio Galloni, November 2022, Score: (90-92)

The 2019 Barolo del Comune di Verduno is a dark, brooding wine. Dark-toned fruit, spice, menthol and licorice lend tons of intensity to this decidedly potent Verduno Barolo. There's real density and mid-palate richness. This is far from an entry-level bottling, that is for sure. Patience is essential. Drink 2024-2034.

  • Kerin O’Keefe, March 2023, Score: 95

Fragrant and refined, Fratelli Alessandria’s 2019 Barolo del Comune di Verduno opens with enticing scents recalling dog rose, perfumed forest berry, cedar and eucalyptus. Lithe and elegantly structured, the savory palate reveals juicy red cherry, spiced cranberry and star anise accompanied by taut, fine-grained tannins. It’s well balanced, with fresh acidity. Drink 2024–2034.

In the small medieval village of Verduno lies the historic Fratelli Alessandria cellar. The family has tended vines in the region since the beginning of the 19th century and today their 12 hectares stretch over some of the best crus in Verduno and also Monforte. This is a true family affair, Gian Battista Alessandria and his wife Flavia tend to the vines while his brother Alessandro and his son Vittore are in the winery. Together, they craft high-quality artisanal wines from the Nebbiolo grape variety but also from some Dolcetto, Barbera and the little-known Pelaverga variety. The Barolos from the village of Verduno are highly distinct and can be lighter, lacier and more elegant than those from other villages.Read less

Region

Piedmont

Piedmont is located in the north western corner of Italy. Though several grape varieties are prominent such as Dolcetto, Barbera and Moscato, it is Nebbiolo that reigns supreme. It produces wines that are not particularly deep in colour, yet they are perfumed, powerful and can age for many years. Due to the ethereal nature of the Nebbiolo grape and the numerous single vineyard wines, many compare top examples to grand cru Burgundies of the Côte de Nuits.Mountainous, its vineyards are cut into the hillsides forming terraces reminiscent of the Mosel Valley in Germany and the northern Rhone Valley in France. The two most notable appellations are Barolo and Barbaresco.
