  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, February 2025, Score: 97

Released in certain years to reflect the character of the vintage from a single vineyard known as Vigna Vecchia Mercatale. The Riserva 2019 bombards the senses with multidimensional flavours notably dried dark cherry, Asian spice and ripe red fruits. A wine of incredible power and intensity harnessing all of Canalicchio di Sopra’s refined energy and balance. A Brunello to savour over many years.

  • Eric Guido, Vinous, November 2024, Score: 95

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva takes its time in the glass, cool-toned and understated, with hints of white smoke, stone dust and lavender before deepening with scents of dried black cherries and foreign spices. This is graceful and finessed, with medium-bodied weight and silken textures that usher in waves of ripe red fruits and rosy inner florals. The 2019 leaves the senses reeling, structured and sapid, yet still quite fresh, with a licorice tinge and nuances of tart pomegranate that resonate on the palate. The 2019 Riserva is classic to the core.

  • Jancis Robinson, October 2024, Score: 17.5

Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Great depth and complexity but very slow to show this fully. Brooding intensity of embryonic fruit on the nose. A full palate of concentrated, layered red fruit with the perfect dose of tangy acidity and finely ground tannins. Long, fruit-driven finish. Still in a monolithic state; patience needed. (WS)

  • Audrey Frick, January 2025, Score: 96

The 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva is a medium red color and is a bit shy on opening before slowly revealing a more layered profile of licorice, cherry, toasted sage, rosemary, and sappy earth. Medium-bodied, it saturates and fills the palate with ripe tannins and a rounded feel, with ripe fruit revealing a hint of spiced red plum. It seems a bit more approachable than the Casaccia and is going to drink well over the coming 15 or so years.

Aromas recalling blue flower, cedar, wild berry and forest floor come to the forefront on the captivating 2019 Brunello Riserva from Canalicchio di Sopra. Showing strength and finesse, the full-bodied, structured palate delivers dried cherry, cranberry, blood orange, licorice and chopped rosemary framed in firm, fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it vibrant and balanced. Showing serious aging potential, this will benefit greatly from several years or more in the cellar. Drink 2031–2039.

  • Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, November 2024, Score: 96

In the bottle with the black label, the Canalicchio di Sopra 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva reveals a savory and austere bouquet with dried fruit flavors, licorice and a hint of brandied plum. The alcohol measures 15% and is the same for all the other Brunellos from the 2020 vintage. Even the 2022 Rosso di Montalcino is high in alcohol at 14.5%. Despite that power, vintner Francesco Ripaccioli manages phenolic ripeness and oak aging masterfully. You might not guess the real alcoholic content in this limited 4,133-bottle release.

First produced in 1966, the Canalicchio di Sopra winery consists of 19 hectares under vine which lie to the north east of the Montalcino hill at approximately 300 metres altitude. The wineries grapes are grown on two very different terrains here, each with different soil types and exposures that provide different characteristics to the Brunello. The grapes from the more warmly exposed Montosoli site give the Brunello excellent richness, concentration and structure whilst those from Canalicchio provide elegance, minerality and finesse. In 2013 it was deemed necessary, due to the cooler nature of the vintage, that 60% of the grapes came from the warmer Montosoli site to add the perfect balance. One of the original 12 members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, Canalicchio di Sopra’s Brunello is one of the finest produced in the north east zone of Montalcino.Read less

Region

Montalcino

Located southwest of Chianti, Montalcino came into its own in the late 1880s when local producer,Biondi-Santi, discovered a Sangiovese clone in his vineyard that was darker in colour than the rest. Its colour, however, was not its only attribute. It produced a wine with notable body, structure and length. He named it ‘brunello' meaning little dark one. This grape's genetic properties along with Montalcino's relatively temperate climate combine to create a wine stylistically different to that of more northerly Chianti. They are usually released approximately 5 years after the vintage following 2 to 4 years ageing in wood. The denomination of Riserva indicates a wine usually produced with more concentrated grapes than the traditional cuvéeand requires a minimum of one additional year of ageing.Today, Montalcino has become one of the most sought after appellations in the Tuscan region.
