  • Goedhuis, November 2020

Once again, the warm summer conditions really suited this centrally located Premier Cru and have made it much more immediately approachable than in some years. This was one of the showstoppers in her range. Bright fresh cranberry and pomegranate scent, it balances fresh red fruits with a touch of warm oriental spice. Its taut tannic core lifts the palate. This is a wine which competes with the Grands Crus of the vintage, it is stupendous.

  • Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 90-92

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Chatelots 1er Cru is very perfumed and floral on the nose of red cherry and wild strawberry mixed with orange pith and light tobacco scents. The medium-bodied plate is well balanced with grainy tannins and good grip toward the tight finish. Maybe a little stern and serious compared to the domaine’s other cuvées, but it should age well. • Burghound, January 2021, Score: 90-92

A slightly riper mix features notes of dark raspberry, plum and appealing hints of spiced tea. The delicious, round and relatively supple medium-bodied flavors that tighten up noticeably on the dusty, lightly stony and youthfully austere finish that exhibits good if not truly distinguished length. This too is lovely and fashioned in an understated style. Drink 2027+

  • Wine Advocate, Score: (92-94)

Opening in the glass with bright aromas of red berry fruit and orange rind, as well as bass notes of licorice and spices, the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chatelots is medium to full-bodied, layered and sumptuously textural, with a pure core of fruit, lively acids and a nicely defined finish. • Matthew Jukes, December 2020, Score: 18+

More closed and less juicy than the village this is an edgier Cru with firm fruit and tight lines and, as always, it will repay patience and loyalty if you allow this wine to reach its full potential. I do not have the self-control, but many do, so go for it, because this is a majestic, if introverted Les Chatelots.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2020, Score: 91-94

Lovely racy mid purple. This is really pretty with exceptional purity, some violets, a little more density of fruit than the Combottes, perhaps a touch more alcohol too, but very manageable. Just the older 1950s vines are used now, as the younger part goes back to the village Chambolle. 4.5 barrels made. 4 Star

Exquisitely pure, ethereal, and terroir-driven, Ghislaine’s wines also have wonderful mineral raciness. The domaine was originally created by Marcel Noëllat, Ghislaine’s maternal grandfather. After attending viticultural college in Beaune in the 1980s, she began assisting her father, Gaston Barthod, at the family domaine. Her straightforward, no-nonsense approach helped introduce a sorting table, extended lees contact, a gentle cold soak before fermentation, and domaine bottling. All this enabled greater control over the quality of fruit, texture of tannins, and purity of flavours. The results have been year upon year of magical masterpieces from Chambolle Musigny. Along with her partner Louis Boillot, today she is joined in the vineyard and cellar by their son, Clément.Read less

Region

Chambolle Musigny

The wines of Chambolle Musigny are like no other. They can be superbly delicate, yet mindblowingly complex. Of all the northern Burgundy appellations, they are the most ethereal, and as a result the most feminine. Most of the Chambolle Musigny vineyard area is encompassed in its Village and Premier Cru appellations including the robust Beaux Bruns, the splendidly mineral Le Cras and the poised yet powerful Les Amoureuses. It produces only two Grand Crus - the round and rich Bonnes Mares which it shares with Morey St. Dénis, as well as what could be described as the Stradivarius of grand crus, Musigny.
