  • Goedhuis, June 2020

The oldest vineyards in the Chapoutier stable of Hermitage vineyards, considered their jewel in the crown. This is a 3ha plot of 80 year old vines at the very top of the hill on hard granite soils. A wine full of vibrance and life, a blend of cranberry and blueberry with hints of cocoa and mocha. The initial attack is all about refinement and subtlety, which then evolves with a crescendo of dynamic fruit flavours. The tannins are tightly woven, giving a strong central core to the wine, a high degree of purity, a brightness of fruit and oozing with masses of long-term aging potential. A truly brilliant wine.

  • Jeb Dunnuck, November 2020, Score: 98-100

Coming from vines just above the Le Méal and around the Chapel, the 2019 Ermitage L’Ermite is 100% Syrah that was brought up in just 20% new French oak. It's a massive wine by any measure and reveals a dense ruby/blue hue as well as incredible smoked meats, cassis, graphite, white flowers, and a liquid rock-like minerality. These all carry to a full-bodied, pedal-to-the-metal Hermitage that has building tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and incredible length, all while staying light on its feet and flawlessly balanced. It shares some similarities to the 2018 yet might be even more concentrated.

In 1879, the distant ancestor Polydor Chapoutier was the first to begin to buy vines, thus moving from the status of wine-grower of an estate to that of a viticulturist, a wine producer and a businessman. Seven generations later, we find Michel, forty something, with a real passion for the expression of soils, at the head of this exceptional vineyard. This young, determined man has succeeded in combining the past with daring and creativity. Michel took the domaine entirely biodynamic and eschews the use of cultured yeasts. His favoured approach is to avoid the use of press wine.Read less

Region

Hermitage

Hermitage is a region that produces both red and white wines. Its famous red is made from 100% Syrah while the white is produced from Marsanne and/or Roussanne. A sweeter and very rare white wine is also produced from grapes that have been dried on straw before being pressed. A slighter warmer micro-climate enables Hermitage's red wines to have more ripeness and structure than Côte Rôtie which adds additional power and longevity. As a result, they are usually the most ‘masculine' styled reds in all of the northern Rhône.
