    Les Boudots is the most northerly Premier Cru in the appellation, neighbouring Vosne Romanée’s Aux Malconsorts. It has the characteristic power of the vineyard, with some Nuits muscle. Ben thinks some of the very best wines in 2019 came from Nuits St Georges and this truly superb wine supports his opinion. With smoky alpine fruits, this has noticeably broad shoulders. It fills the mouth with its sweet dark fruits and a touch of cocoa and spice. Brilliantly rich and very long.

    The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet of red cherries, raspberry and bergamot scents, becoming increasingly floral with aeration. The palate is well balanced and completely disguises the two-thirds whole bunch. Very harmonious, with a lithe and quite persistent finish. Excellent. This is a superb NSG from Leroux. Three barrels produced. 2023-2040

    The proximity to Vosne is in evidence as the broad-ranging nose is gorgeously spicy with plenty of floral elements, especially violet, in evidence on the essence of black raspberry and leather scents. The seductively textured flavors are not especially dense though there is still good power to the focused, balanced and beautifully long finish where the complexity really distinguishes it. This is excellent and a wine that should also age gracefully on its impeccable balance. Lovely juice. Sweet Spot Outstanding. Drink 2031+

    Leroux is a big fan of Boudots. Goedhuis get a lot of this wine. Never racked. One-third new oak. Barrel sample. Transparent crimson. Solid and broad. Aromatic. Quite racy but more solid than the Vosne village wine with a certain inky quality at this point. Drink 2027-2040

    Rich purple, with a grand cru nose, vinified like one! Looks after itself, such a deep sweet magical fruit and then the whole bunch (two thirds) shows in the briary finish. The finale is in darker fruit, but really well integrated and dances at the back. Very persistent. 5 stars

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
