  • Goedhuis, December 2020

A tiny parcel which was a hugely astute purchase by the domaine in 1990. 41% whole bunch vinification allows the wine to express the grace that is so characteristic of Romanée St Vivant. A little plumper than in some years, a touch less ethereal but still magnificent. This is so complex, with flavours of damsons and sloes, and a hint of Valrhona chocolate. The richness and volume are apparent throughout and yet it retains a silky, harmonious balance. So much potential and life ahead of it.

  • Neal Martin, September 2023, Score: 97

The 2019 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is a little smudged on the nose and more mercurial than La Romanée that precedes it. Showing an initial touch of leather, the fruit eventually surfaces and become increasingly floral and pure, with a hint of oyster shell. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry. The acidity is quite citric and imparts angularity to this Grand Cru, so it doesn't really "flow" as well as its peers. Maybe it just requires time? It articulates the winemaking more than the terroir at the moment. But hold on… After 20 minutes, it undergoes a Damascene resurrection, the terroir finally manifested and displaying much more refinement on the finish. Score leaps accordingly. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. 97 points. Drink 2027 - 2044. Neal Martin, Vinous

  • Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 95-97

The 2019 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru comprises 40% whole bunch and 25% new oak because winemaker Géraldine Godot wanted less wood influence during élevage. That was an astute decision, because it renders a very seductive, pure and engaging bouquet of copious red cherries, kirsch and blueberry fruit laced with pressed violets that is très R.S.V. The palate is medium-bodied with a sensual, velvety-smooth entry, a mixture of red and black fruit and impressive volume, but it also delivers the luxuriant elegance you expect from this Grand Cru. Fans out wonderfully on the finish. Just a gorgeous, sensual Grand Cru. Drink 2024 - 2050

  • Burghound, January 2021, Score: 92-95

A top note of menthol is present on the overtly spicy nose that mixes hints of ginger and cinnamon tea, clove and sandalwood with notes of black raspberry. The sleek and sophisticated medium weight flavors possess a strikingly refined mouthfeel while exhibiting excellent length on the firm, serious and austere finale. Unsurprisingly, this classy effort is not likely to make for especially good early drinking, so patience strongly advised. Drink 2036+

  • Wine Advocate, January 2021, Score: 93-95

Unfurling with aromas of plums, blackberries and Griotte cherries, complemented by hints of loamy soil, raw cocoa, rose petals and toasty new oak, the 2019 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is full-bodied, velvety and textural, with a sumptuous, enveloping and richly tannin profile. Bright and layered, it concludes with a broad, expansive finish.

  • Matthew Jukes, December 2020, Score: 19+

Yippee, the fruit is fondanty, profoundly exotic and truly expressive and while more slender than many, this is a spectacular wine and one which is already showing its class and immense appeal.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2020, Score: 95-98

40% whole bunch vinification. Rich imperial purple colour. The bouquet suggests considerable depth of flavour to follow, but hasn’t yet offered any detail. The whole bunches just lift the wine a fraction, without dominating. Magical stuff on the palate with all the generous gracious star quality of a great vineyard. The acidity is perfectly integrated, the tannins are fine, and this is indeed very long. Really satisfying long finish. 4 Star.

Domaine de l'Arlot was created in 1987 when AXA Millésimes purchased the property in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits St Georges. Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)Read less

Romanée Saint Vivant

Romanée-St-Vivant, which takes its name from the monastery of St-Vivant founded in c. 900, is a Grand Cru vineyard in Vosne-Romanée on the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. It is the largest of Vosne-Romanée's six Grands Crus and produces red wine only. The vineyard is located on the slope to the north of the town of Vosne-Romanée and is the nearest vineyard to this village. Romanée-Saint-Vivant's soils are deep and rich in clay and lime, which means the wines of Romanée-St-Vivant are usually lighter and less powerful than its neighbours'. Domaine de la Romanée Conti is the largest proprietor, owning over half of the area's 9.5 ha.
