  • Goedhuis, July 2023

The highly enjoyable 2020 Beaune Célébration from Louis Jadot is a blend of 17 different premiers crus in the village of Beaune. It showcases this outstanding appellation in all its vibrant glory. Fragrant, deep red fruits of cherry, dark raspberry, plum and blood orange flecked with cinnamon and sandalwood wrap around a graphite, mineral core. Some brighter, higher-pitched red fruit such as cranberry come to the fore with time in the glass as do delicate notes of cracked black pepper and dried tea leaf. The fleshy, melting tannins are already well resolved on the palate which offers up plenty more opulent, polished fruit along a fine, fresh bead of acidity. There is impressive concentration here which gives the 2020 great ageing promise but the lacelike nature of the tannins makes a pleasure to drink already. Drink 2023-2032.

There are some 3,500 cases of the 2020 Beaune 1er Cru Célébration (Maison Louis Jadot), a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless wine evocative of smoky berries, spices and licorice, framed by creamy new oak. More polished and elegant than the muscular 2018, the last rendition of this bottling (which blends more than a dozen of Beaune's premiers crus), it will offer a broad drinking window. Drink 2025-2043.

Producer

Maison Louis Jadot

Founded in 1859 by Louis Jadot, Maison Louis Jadot has always been situated in the centre of Beaune in the heart of the Burgundy vineyards. Managed by three generations of the Jadot family and then by the Gagey family assisted by Jacques Lardière in the cellar, Jadot is now directed by Pierre Henry Gagey, who has introduced a new wine making team, Frédéric Barnier and Guillaume Large. Since careful ageing in wooden barrels is so very important for the balance, aromas and the ageing potential of a great wine, in 1996, Louis Jadot entered into partnership with a firm of coopers, forming Cadus Cooperage, established in Ladoix Serrigny. This allows them to control their wood sourcing and the barrel production. Maison Louis Jadot now controls 105 hectares in Burgundy with more than 70 hectares in the Côte d'Or, exclusively in Premier and Grand Cru. They produce both negociant wines under the Maison Louis Jadot label and a number of Domaines: Gagey, Duc de Magenta, Louis Jadot and Héritiers de Louis Jadot.

Region

Bourgogne

This blanket regional appellation can apply to wines throughout Burgundy (60% of the area's production) as long as they comply with regulations relating to grape type, yield and alcohol content. Reds and roses are from Pinot Noir or Gamay. Whites are Chardonnay. They are usually the most straightforward of the Burgundy wines, and as a result are the least expensive and the most approachable upon release. In the hands of a more serious producer these can represent exceptional value and quality. The wines are made with the same care and attention to detail as their grander wines. However, they may not qualify for a village or communal appellation because the vines are too young or the vineyard area is outside the appellation boundary.
