  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, February 2025

A worthy contender for one of the wines of the vintage, the 2020 opens with a burst of dark cherry, wild berries and clove. There is an incredible intensity to the fruit yet the tannins are sweet, round and pliant. With no Riserva produced in 2020 all of the juice from the designated Riserva vineyard known as Vigna Vecchia Mercatale, has gone into the straight Brunello this year adding extra depth and accentuating the quality of this fantastic wine. An unmissable Brunello that can be approached relatively early but will develop further over 10 years.

  • Eric Guido, Vinous, November 2024, Score: 95

A burst of black cherries and cloves gives way to shavings of cedar and lifting hints of mentholated herbs as the dynamic 2020 Brunello di Montalcino comes to life in the glass. This is soothingly round and pliant with an inner sweetness up front and crisp wild berry fruits that cascade across the palate. It's structured and firm, yet its tannins are sweet and round, tapering off with a pleasantly bitter tinge of blackberry and sour citrus. The 2020 aims to please and it is already incredibly approachable today. With no Riserva produced in 2020, all of the juice from Vigna Vecchia Mercatale was used to bolster this spectacular Brunello.

  • Jancis Robinson, October 2024, Score: 17+

Mid ruby with orange tinges. Balsamic nose with eucalyptus-oil notes and cigar-box hints. Full, lush cherry-fruit palate with polished yet gripping tannins. Juicy, long and hedonistic yet still a little embryonic. (WS)

  • Audrey Frick, January 2025, Score: 95

Pouring a jeweled red/ruby color, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino is attractive and layered on the nose, with pure notes of red cherries, sweet Mediterranean herbs, crushed roses, and mossy earth. Medium-bodied, it brings lovely energy to the palate and is upfront with mouthwatering salty notes, snappy ripe acidity, and a clean, balanced finish, with even ripeness and stone-fruited notes of apricot on the back palate. This highly appealing Brunello is hard to resist now but likely has the ability to go the long haul over the coming 15-20 years.

  • Kerin O’Keefe, November 2024, Score: 96

You could get lost just in the alluring aromas of plum, fragrant blue flower, freshly mown hay, forest floor and leather on the beautiful 2020 Brunello from Canalicchio di Sopra. It’s young, fresh, elegantly structured and delicious, delivering layers of Marasca cherry, raspberry, star anise and dried rosemary enveloped in velvety tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced.

  • Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, November 2024, Score: 93+

This is a standout wine that marries red and purple fruit flavors with tangy hints of green curry leaf, rhubarb and sweet earth. The Canalicchio di Sopra 2020 Brunello di Montalcino carries a distinct signature that recalls not only the Sangiovese grape but a sense of place. You can mistake this for nothing but a Brunello. The vintage manages power and aromatic intensity but is also magically leaner and definitely more elegant in terms of mouthfeel. The immediate results are perhaps more accessible and also quite pleasurable now in this 41,362-bottle release.

First produced in 1966, the Canalicchio di Sopra winery consists of 19 hectares under vine which lie to the north east of the Montalcino hill at approximately 300 metres altitude. The wineries grapes are grown on two very different terrains here, each with different soil types and exposures that provide different characteristics to the Brunello. The grapes from the more warmly exposed Montosoli site give the Brunello excellent richness, concentration and structure whilst those from Canalicchio provide elegance, minerality and finesse. In 2013 it was deemed necessary, due to the cooler nature of the vintage, that 60% of the grapes came from the warmer Montosoli site to add the perfect balance. One of the original 12 members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, Canalicchio di Sopra’s Brunello is one of the finest produced in the north east zone of Montalcino.Read less

Region

Montalcino

Located southwest of Chianti, Montalcino came into its own in the late 1880s when local producer,Biondi-Santi, discovered a Sangiovese clone in his vineyard that was darker in colour than the rest. Its colour, however, was not its only attribute. It produced a wine with notable body, structure and length. He named it ‘brunello' meaning little dark one. This grape's genetic properties along with Montalcino's relatively temperate climate combine to create a wine stylistically different to that of more northerly Chianti. They are usually released approximately 5 years after the vintage following 2 to 4 years ageing in wood. The denomination of Riserva indicates a wine usually produced with more concentrated grapes than the traditional cuvéeand requires a minimum of one additional year of ageing.Today, Montalcino has become one of the most sought after appellations in the Tuscan region.
