A fine Brunello of grace and elegance, this mineral-driven beauty displays intense floral flavours alongside an interchangeable array of red and blue fruits. There is overwhelming purity here on the refined, structured palate and this will be one to cellar for several years. An exceptional 2020 from Laura and Adriano.

  • Eric Guido, Vinous, November 2024, Score: 94

The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino entices with a seductive bouquet of crushed cherries and strawberries elevated by hints of mint, cedar and saddle leather. This is a more graceful and elegant style, with medium-bodied textures and pure wild berry fruit notes that ride a wave of brisk acidity. The 2020 echoes with nuances of licorice and blue and purple inner florals while leaving a subtle coating of fine tannins that frame the experience quite nicely.

Forest floor, wild rose, Mediterranean scrub, new leather and forest berry aromas take shape on the fragrant 2020 Brunello from Gianni Brunelli. Showing elegance and restraint, the savory palate delivers red cherry, woodland strawberry, truffle and orange zest before a star anise finish. Silky tannins and fresh acidity provide seamless support and balance. Drink 2027–2032.

  • Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, November 2024, Score: 95

The Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is balanced, finely textured and shows smooth consistency over the palate. There is a lot of life in this vibrant Brunello. Red and purple fruits segue to sweet earth and iris root. I especially love the mouthfeel achieved here. It's that combination of richness and extreme silkiness that sets it apart. This is a release of 16,907 bottles plus larger formats.

Producer

Gianni Brunelli

Having enjoyed over 10 years of success as restaurateurs in Sienna, Gianni Brunelli returned home to Montalcino with his wife Laura. In 1987, following the death of his father, Gianni bought back the family’s old property – Le Chiuse di Sotto – a modest-sized farm northeast of Montalcino, split evenly between sangiovese vines and olive groves. Together, Gianni and Laura fast gained a reputation for producing some of the most impressive Brunellos of the region, expanding their estate with the purchase of nearby Podernovone in the mid-1990s. It is from this 4.5-hectare property that their exceptional Brunello and Rosso wines are made, as well as the merlot-based Amor Costante. The Brunellis have always been fervent exponents of organic viticulture, steering clear of the use of herbicides and chemicals, with the belief that a conscientious hands-on approach in the vineyard is key to producing high-quality wines; yields are deliberately kept low, and the grapes are hand-harvested in order to guarantee the quality of fruit. Sadly, Gianni passed away unexpectedly in 2008, however Laura continues to uphold her husband’s philosophy of winemaking, while bringing her own distinctive style to the wines. Due to their lightness and elegance, Laura’s wines are superb from an early age, however they are more than capable of matching the best when it comes to ageing.

Region

Montalcino

Located southwest of Chianti, Montalcino came into its own in the late 1880s when local producer,Biondi-Santi, discovered a Sangiovese clone in his vineyard that was darker in colour than the rest. Its colour, however, was not its only attribute. It produced a wine with notable body, structure and length. He named it ‘brunello' meaning little dark one. This grape's genetic properties along with Montalcino's relatively temperate climate combine to create a wine stylistically different to that of more northerly Chianti. They are usually released approximately 5 years after the vintage following 2 to 4 years ageing in wood. The denomination of Riserva indicates a wine usually produced with more concentrated grapes than the traditional cuvéeand requires a minimum of one additional year of ageing.Today, Montalcino has become one of the most sought after appellations in the Tuscan region.
