  • Neal Martin, May 2021, Score: 92-94

The 2020 Roc de Cambes has a glorious , irresistible bouquet of ravishing dark cherries, blueberry, crushed violets and incense aromas; the oak here is very nicely enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied and finely tuned, displaying supple tannins and a silky texture. There is wonderful harmony and palpable energy toward the finish. This actually challenges Tertre-Rôteboeuf, as if to say, why should you take the gold medal every year? It's that good. Drink 2026 - 2040

  • Antonio Galloni, December 2022, Score: 95

The 2020 Roc de Cambes is a potent, reticent wine that is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. Bright red-toned fruit, crushed flowers, blood orange, mint and dried herbs open first. Vibrant acids and open-knit aromatics lend energy as the 2020 gradually unfurls in the glass, with the Cabernet very much driving the flavor profile and overall feel. This exotic beauty is a total stunner. Give it time, though. Drink 2026-2040

  • Antonio Galloni, June 2021, Score: 92-94

The 2020 Roc de Cambes opens with a huge bouquet of scorched earth, tar, licorice, gravel and incense. A rich, explosive wine, this is going to need at least a few years to come together, but it is impressive even in the early going. Inky red/purplish berry fruit, spice, leather and floral accents linger on the substantial finish. There is a lot of wine here. Drink 2030 - 2045

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2021, Score: 17.5+

The perfume is astounding on this succulent wine with coffee beans, dark chocolate, Mirabelle plums and blackberry jelly confounding the senses. The oak is typically strident, too, with lashings of carpentry jousting with the fully ripe fruit. Of course, it is all in balance in spite of the overt enthusiasm of the components and, in common with the finer wines of this vintage, there is a cool, refreshing, mint-spiked finish that snaps the palate back into shape. While this may not be the most detailed Roc de Cambes in recent vintages it certainly provides a lot of fun on the palate and I applaud its generosity and joie de vivre.

  • Jancis Robinson, May 2021, Score: 16.5

Ripe and concentrated but less decadent than the other wines in the Mitjavile stable. More dark fruit and innate freshness as well as a form that is linear rather than spherical. Touch of toasted oak and tannins that have a crunchy, mineral feel. (JL) Drink 2026 – 2035

  • Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021, Score: 91-93

Dark garnet in color, the wine sports a complex nose of espresso, spice box, forest leaf, tobacco leaf and dark red pit fruits. Sweet and savory, spicy and fresh, with dusty tannins and plenty of ripe, earthy, salty fruits on the palate and in the finish, this character filled wine has length and complexity.

He undertook to reinvigorate the 14ha vineyard and introduced late harvesting (traditionally in this area they harvest too early, whilst the grapes are still a little under-ripe). Proportions of grapes are 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. Fermentation is in temperature controlled cement vats and ageing in barriques - 50% new - for 15-18 months. The wine is full bodied, robust, rich and long lasting, yet well balanced.Read less

Region

Côtes de Bourg

Côtes de Bourg is a Bordeaux appellation surrounding the town of Bourg on the right bank of the Gironde, 20 km north-west of Bordeaux. It has a maritime climate and the vineyards close to the river are particularly well protected from frost damage. The Côtes de Bourg are characterised by the diversity and richness of their soils, composed of mainly clay and limestone soils with sand and gravel in some parts. Most of the wine produced is red wine. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are planted on clay and sandy gravel soils, while Merlot is also grown on the widespread areas of clay and limestone. Historically the region produced robust and sober wines but the wines are becoming more approachable with the introduction of more fruit driven vinification techniques. Red Côtes de Bourg are garnet in colour and are predominantly based on the Merlot grape, blended with smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. They are typically earthy but fruity with blackcurrant dominating the flavour profile. They can be laid down for 6-10 years or more but can also be drunk young. A little white is made, chiefly from Ugni Blanc and Colombard grapes.
