  • Neal Martin, January 2022, Score: 94-96

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very well-defined bouquet, quite mineral-driven with crushed rock and pressed iris flower combined with dark cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, very focused with quite a strict and saline finish. There is a sense of class here and it has the substance to age well in bottle. This is also aromatically quite spicy with its combination of ripe and fresh black cherry, leather and warm earth aromas. There is once again excellent density to the big-bodied, equally muscular and quite powerful flavors that possess equally impressive depth and persistence on the very firmly structured and youthfully austere finale. Here too ample patience is advised. Drink: 2040+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18.5+

A velvety, come-hither style of Clos de Vougeot with none of the wildness found in other Domaines, this is a seductive and delicious style which is so fruit-forward it is bound to drink well young, but the real excitement will come in ten years when it will reveal more depth and power.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 93-95

Nine barrels instead of 14 usually (but 5 in 2021). Deep purple with brighter rim. Sturdy stuff on the nose with some black fruit. Mulberry and blackberry, certainly on the lusher side, but this is backed by the familiar Clos Vougeot structure and of course the need to wait ten years. But I would not want this any riper.

The Hudelots are an ancient Burgundian family whose ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle since before the French Revolution. Needless to say, wine has been in their blood for almost as long. Alain Huedlot began his wine career in 1954 working for his father and other local growers. At the ripe young age of 20, he started renting vineyards from his family in Chambolle Musigny until eventually receiving other small parcels from his father. Following a passionate and whirlwind romance with the granddaughter of Charles Noellat, he married despite protests from her family. This controversial union ensured additional vineyards despite a harrying and lengthy legal battle. Today the domaine owns a total of 10 well-situated hectares, which are split over 5 communes. Alain Hudelot’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt is a man on a mission. Having arrived at the domaine from Champagne only six years ago, he is already considered one of the brightest young talents in the region. These wines are wonderful examples of traditionally styled Burgundy - superbly pure and focused with an undeniable sense of terroir.Read less
