  • Goedhuis, December 2021

The Grivot parcel of Clos de Vougeot is in the lower section of this large Grand Cru. Such a location was a huge advantage in 2020, benefitting from the vineyard’s excellent water retention capacity during the drier summer period. Packed with layered crumble and bramble fruit aromas. On the palate this is lush and generous yet still graceful, less heavy than the traditional perception of the Clos. Very full bodied and opulent, with rounded tannins on the finish.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 92-94

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru came across a little backward and surly on the nose compared the the Vosne-Romanées despite coaxing. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine definition, taut and fresh with a well-defined finish. Here, I actually find more in the mouth than on the nose, at least at the moment. Hopefully the aromatics will kick on during élevage. Drink 2025 - 2045

  • Burghound, January 2022, Score: 93-95

A brooding and densely fruited nose grudgingly reveals its array of dark berries, poached plum, warm earth and a soupçon of wood. The supple but mouth coating and velvet-textured larger scaled flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract while delivering excellent persistence on the youthfully austere, powerful and balanced finale. This excellent effort is very firm and should age accordingly; indeed two decades is not out of the question. Drink 2038+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 19+

You will have to wait a very long time for this wine to emerge from its shell, but it is certainly destined for stardom (one day). Very closed and elemental in the glass and rather muscular, too, this is a terrific Clos de Vougeot and in time this stands a chance of being one of the most sensual and expressive examples of this vineyard in this vintage.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 94-97

Dark black purple in colour, ultra-concentrated in the rich ripe raspberry mode, but not over the top. What an incredible concentration of fruit on the palate! Super-dark raspberry, firm Clos Vougeot tannins but not overdone, just the right acidity. This is certainly a very good wine, and may develop into something even more spectacular.

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Clos de Vougeot

Clos de Vougeot is a Grand Cru appellation situated in the heart of the Cote de Nuits producing only red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. The vines are enclosed within a single walled vineyard built by monks in the 12th and 14th Centuries. With 47.54 hectares under vine Clos de Vougeot is the largest Grand Cru vineyard in the Cote d'Or.
