  • Goedhuis, December 2021

Nicolas’s winemaking style always suits this beautiful Grand Cru in Flagey Echezeaux. It has a comfortable ease, with damson and sloe flavours. There is a good integration between harmonious sweetness and some taut mineral freshness. Very good depth, with a touch of muscle and lots of Grand Cru confidence on the finish.

  • Burghound, April 2022, Score: 90-92

Pungent and decidedly ripe aromas of wood toast, black cherry liqueur and a plethora of spice elements introduces round, rich and succulent medium weight plus flavors that also conclude in a firm, moderately grippy and slightly warm finale. While the description admittedly does not sound promising, this may well come together if allowed at least a few years of cellaring to begin to round out the tannic spine as there is good underlying material. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.Read less

Region

Echézeaux

One of two Grand Crus within the Flagey-Echezeaux area right in the heart of the Cote de Nuits. Relatively large and consequently diverse for a Grand Cru, the better Echézeaux wines undoubtedly deserve this status. As always in Burgundy vineyard location and grower is critical.
