  • Goedhuis, December 2021

Aux Boudots is one of the finest sites in Nuits St Georges. It mirrors many of the traits found in neighbouring Vosne Romanée 1er Cru, Aux Malconsorts. A firm muscular structure on a deep, dark fruit backdrop. In 2020, this wine shows how aged and young vines can combine to create a wine of perfect integration. It reflects the depth and powerful concentration of 90-year vines, redolent with spice, mocha and wild savoury dark fruits, and blends beautifully the high-toned energy of the young vines. Vibrant and full of life.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 93-95

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Boudots 1er Cru has the best aromatics among Grivot’s Nuits Saint-Georges with very well defined red berry fruit, briary and light sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, slightly savory on the entry, fresh and saline on the finish. This has real verve and class, though it will benefit from time in bottle. Drink 2026 - 2050

  • Burghound, January 2022, Score: 89-92

An extremely ripe nose lacks the same freshness as the best in the range though importantly, there are no notes of port-like nuances on the black cherry and spice aromas. The dense, powerful and very serious medium weight plus flavors possess excellent mid-palate density while exhibiting fine length on the long if slightly warm finale. This is a big Boudots that may better harmonize with time in bottle. Drink 2035+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18+

With a lovely classical stance and some Boudots fleshiness, too, this is a rather lovely wine, and it certainly has the ingredients to age well. The price is getting fairly steep, and I imagine that only true Grivot devotees will be excited about putting their names down for this and the following wines.

  • Jasper Morris MW, Janaury 2022, Score: 93-95

Dense rich black purple. The nose is very heady but Boudots can carry it. Black cherry but there are nuances here, not just power. A wonderful depth, length and breadth to this, brilliantly energetic fruit, tannins just in the right place, refreshing mineral acidity. Finishes on black fruit with a touch of liquorice but wafts of redder notes are never far away.

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.Read less

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
