  • Wine Advocate, July 2022, Score: 93

A blend of 65% Syrah, 29% Grenache and 6% Mataro, the 2020 Bin 138 Shiraz-Grenache-Mataro is aromatically spicy and exciting, with peppered raspberry, star anise, strawberry and humbug through the finish. It's a really lovely, supple, delicious wine. There is polish and shape here. Early-ish drinking recommended to capture the vivacity and life of the fruit. Drink 2022 – 2029.

Vivid ruby. Floral-accented aromas of dark berries and cherry cola, plus a spicy topnote and a hint of smokiness. Juicy, expressive and open-knit blackberry, candied plum and kirsch flavors, along with a discreet touch of cracked pepper. Velvety and approachable, given some air, delivering a smooth blend of power and vivacity and finishing with fine clarity and gentle tannic grip. All large French oak barrels, 12.5% of them new. Drink 2024-2033.

  • William Kelley, July 2024

47% Grenache, 43% Shiraz, with a drop of Mataro, it comes as little surprise to know that the 138 draws inspiration from the wines of Southern Rhône. The exceptional 2022 vintage has helped produce a GSM that is plush and vibrant, with wild strawberries and blackcurrants coming to the fore. There is a delightful hint of spice and black olive too, while the palate is creamy and loaded with flavour. Elevated to ‘Bin’ status in 1998, the latest release is an aromatic and approachable blend.

Region

Barossa Valley

Located in the south east of the wine state of South Australia, the Barossa Valley is not only the most famous wine region in Australia but also is the one which produces the most wine. The summers here are hot and dry so drought can be a problem. As a result, unirrigated bush vines scatter the landscape, some even dating back to the 19th Century. These old traditional Shiraz vines can produce the most concentrated form of what has become one of the world's most distinctive winestyles, Barossa Shiraz. These are rich, powerful, chocolaty and spicy wines, to which Viognier is sometimes added for extra perfume. There are old Grenache and Mourvèdre vines too in the region, which combine with Shiraz to make the popular blend ‘GSM'. Semillon is more common than Chardonnayin the Barossa, producing some rich white wines. Cabernet Sauvignon can also be found but only on certain soils as it is less dependable than Shiraz.
