    The Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz has always been a dense, concentrated and muscly wine. Then imagine the overlay of a warm and dry vintage (for some context—26 days in a row over 35 degrees Celsius), the second in a string of warm, dry vintages. Yields were drastically down, up to 70% in some places, and the power of the reds in particular are a force to be reckoned with. So here, to 2020 Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz: savory, spicy tannins form a casing around the fruit, the oak supporting from the back. There are notes of dark blackberry, blood plum, Nag Champa (clove tobacco), pink peppercorns and saturated fruit. There's a side of deli meat in there, too. If you can put aside the density and weight of the wine (impressive), the fruit is pure and beautiful. 2020 may have been responsible for brooding and concentrated wines, but I have found much to love in this year. This included. Sensational. Drink 2022-2037.

    The 2020 Bin 150 is drawn from the Marananga sub region known for the impressive power and density of the local wines. While this label is generally opulent, the 2020 vintage has crafted a more elegant, refined and almost St Henri like expression that is measured but still delivers wonderful power and complexity. It offers up focused tarry, licorice, choc-berry fruits with picture perfect sweet oak sitting pretty. There is then fantastic underlying strength which delivers a powerful core of flavour and extraordinary length with firm tannins in strong support. It’s muscular and brooding right now but will flesh out beautifully over the next decade or more. Drink 2025-2038.

Region

Barossa Valley

Located in the south east of the wine state of South Australia, the Barossa Valley is not only the most famous wine region in Australia but also is the one which produces the most wine. The summers here are hot and dry so drought can be a problem. As a result, unirrigated bush vines scatter the landscape, some even dating back to the 19th Century. These old traditional Shiraz vines can produce the most concentrated form of what has become one of the world's most distinctive winestyles, Barossa Shiraz. These are rich, powerful, chocolaty and spicy wines, to which Viognier is sometimes added for extra perfume. There are old Grenache and Mourvèdre vines too in the region, which combine with Shiraz to make the popular blend ‘GSM'. Semillon is more common than Chardonnayin the Barossa, producing some rich white wines. Cabernet Sauvignon can also be found but only on certain soils as it is less dependable than Shiraz.
