  • Goedhuis, December 2021

Les Fourneaux is the first 1er Cru as you come into the village of Savigny from Beaune and is often the most forward of the domaine’s 1ers Crus. A very aromatic wine, with alpine strawberry and loganberry. This has plenty of lift and purity, with great finesse, full of youthful pleasure.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 91-93

The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Fournaux 1er Cru is well-defined on the nose but quite compact and introverted at first, blackcurrant mixed with redcurrant and a hint of balsamic. The palate is crisp and grainy in texture, again, quite "crunchy" in texture with a liberal sprinkling of white pepper and sage towards the finish. Very fine. Drink 2025 - 2040

  • Burghound, April 2022, Score: 90-92

Opaque. Very ripe yet still nicely fresh aromas include of cassis, black cherry liqueur and plenty of newly turned earth. The suave, round and generously proportioned larger-scaled flavors also possess excellent power while displaying fine length on the rustic, serious and built-to-age finale. Patience required. Drink 2032+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 89-91

“From here on things change” says Chisa, after we have found the early cuvées tough going in 2020. Dense purple black interior with lighter purple rim. Already the nose is more recognisably pinot, intense raspberry. Ultra-concentrated still but easier to understand the balance compared to the earlier wines. Long fine finish with a sensuality. Some tannins, some whole bunch crunch and very persistent.

Producer

Domaine Simon Bize et Fils

Domaine Simon Bize is a substantial estate by Burgundy standards, with 22 hectares mainly in the appellation of Savigny Lès Beaune and two fine grand cru parcels in Corton Charlemagne and Latricières Chambertin. It is now under the careful management of Chisa, the late Patrick Bize’s wife, and Marielle Grivot, Patrick’s sister. They like to continue his practice of whole bunch fermentation and gentle handling of the fruit during the vinification process. The result is always very stylish wines, which possess the sweetness of fruit and subtle core of tannins, which are such a character of the wines of Savigny.

Region

Savigny-lès-Beaune

The picturesque village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, just to the north of Beaune, is a relatively prolific producer in Burgundian terms. Less serious than its neighbours, Pommard and Volnay, these are nonethless delicious wines - perfumed, delicate and elegant. A tiny amount of white is produced.
