  • Goedhuis, December 2021

Claude describes their Fournaux as a “super village cuvée”. They have combined their 1er Cru parcel (2/3rds of the blend) with their village plot of Fournaux because of the small crop this vintage. Unsurprisingly, this punches well above its weight. With sweet fresh strawberry on the palate, this is graceful and harmonious. The tannins are subtle and the finish is packed with bright, precise red fruits. A very lovely style.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 86-88

The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Fournaux, is a blend of one plot 2.10ha that includes both Premier and Village Cru (it was previously bottled separately.) Juicy red fruit on the nose with touches of orange blossom, this just needs a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly powdery tannins, quite austere for the vintage but with decent length. Drink 2023 - 2033

  • Burghound, April 2022, Score: 90-92

An ultra-fresh nose features notes of both red and dark currant that enjoy pretty top notes of violet and rose petal plus a touch of earth. There is excellent precision to the super-sleek and precise middle weight flavors that terminate in a balanced finale that is less rustic than usual and with only a touch of rusticity. This offers especially good quality for its level and is recommended. Drink 2027+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 90-93

Two thirds premier cru, one third village, both planted in 1956, with massal selection from Domaine Tollot-Beaut. Young vines are kept out of the blend for the moment. Lovely royal purple with a fabulous nose, almost still vinification aromas. Very sensual at the same time, cream of cherry, with a slightly stricter feel at the back, as the tannins kick in. But there is a velvet grace throughout.

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Savigny-lès-Beaune

The picturesque village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, just to the north of Beaune, is a relatively prolific producer in Burgundian terms. Less serious than its neighbours, Pommard and Volnay, these are nonethless delicious wines - perfumed, delicate and elegant. A tiny amount of white is produced.
