  • Goedhuis, December 2021

Les Rouges is perched above Echézeaux Grand Cru on poor pebbly soil and is not the easiest of vineyards to work. Not the growers’ favourite spot on a cold winter’s day, but they know the result is worth it. This is a beauty. As Mathilde says: “it is so full of energy and makes the mouth water!” Perfumed, with dark wild Alpine and forest fruits, it races across the palate and just flows with excitement. It is perfectly integrated, bright, pure, and fresh. It will give great pleasure in youth, but also has the potential to age in perfect harmony.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 91-93

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Rouges 1er Cru has a well defined bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and light floral, rose petals scents. Hints of brown spice emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, quite linear and "serious" with a savory tinge on the finish. Give this 4-5 years in bottle. Drink 2026 - 2046

  • Burghound, January 2022, Score: 91-93

An exceptionally spicy nose freely offers up its cool aromas of red currant, raspberry and poached plum that are also trimmed in hints of sandalwood and an unusual but interesting hint of garrigue. There is excellent density and minerality to the markedly intense middle weight flavors that terminate in a linear, youthfully austere and bitter pit fruit finale. This is also very good though firm even to need a decade or so of cellaring. Drink 2030+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18+

There is far more flesh and richness here and it is all nicely controlled and expressive. At twice the price of the village wine this is a big step up and there is certainly a lot more going on on the palate.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 90-93

Heady dense purple. The bouquet awaits, but suggests a fresher feel than Les Chaumes. Powerful cherry kernel, fresh acidity, firm tannins, a wealth of raspberry and pure cherry to finish. The backbone remains skeletal but there is plenty of fruit to surround it.

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.Read less

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
